911 3.2 rebuild a few months back...

Michael J. Sherman 25 April 2005 18:17:00

Hey all,

Just wanted to get an opinion. I had my 3.2 rebuilt last November.
Everything, top and bottom.

A few days this past week, when I start it up in the mornings, I get a
puff (maybe 'cloud' is better) of blueish-white smoke (oil). Ever
since November this was not the case, but it just started all of the
sudden last week. It's done it three times now.

Can anyone think of what may have just happened? Certainly this
*should* not be a piston ring or valve guide issue, since they are all
brand new.

Any thoughts before I take it back to the shop that did the engine work?

Thanks!

Sounds normal to me. I'm betting the weather is warmer now, and so
you're seeing it more -- oil flows better when it's warmer. My 3.0
(also recently rebuilt) does the same thing. As long as it doesn't
persist, i.e. after it's warmed up, it's normal.

Thanks for the reply, Ed! Good call on the warmer weather. No doubt
that is it. I'm also using natural oil for the first time (shop put
it in after the rebuild) so I'm sure I'm just experiencing different
oil viscocity and its different reaction to weather.

Is your car a daily driver, or does it sit for several days or more between
starts? I've got an '85 3.2 with 130k on the original motor, and a '70
911T with a raced up 2.7 with 10k on the rebuild. Both of them will do
the same thing if they sit for more than 2 days... One thing to watch
carefully would be oil consumption! My 3.2 still sips oil, 1 qt. of
Mobil1 15-50w per 1500-1800 miles. If you are well below that, after a
fresh rebuild (broken in), then you can start singing the blues!
