| 99 Grand Prix Overheats w/AC on Guest 09:12:00 |
| | On these really hot summer days (100-degrees), I'm unable to run my air conditioner without overheating the engine. I've taken the car in to a TUNEX to have the thing checked out, and the only thing they found was semi-old coolant. They replaced this and it helped a little.
They checked the fan as well, and it turns on more or less when it's supposed to (i.e. as soon as I turn the AC on). Here's the scenario...
Only during the heat of the day, if I turn the AC on in relatively slow traffic, the temp climbs quickly to 210, then climbs steadily to the red zone. The TEMP light comes on. If I turn off the AC and keep driving, the TEMP light goes off within a minute or two. If I drive for 20-30 mins with the AC off, the temp returns to 210 (the normal running temp).
If the car is running hot (when the guage is maybe 3/4 the way to the red zone) and I turn the engine off for a short time, when I turn it back on, the temp is maxed out and the TEMP light is on. Isn't there a fan that is supposed to run even when the engine isn't running?
This has to have something to do with the AC, but I don't want to go get raped by the Pontiac dealer until I absolutely have to. I've already had an argument with the dealer over their insistance that I had to replace the original battery with an "authentic Pontiac battery" instead of an "aftermarket" one from AutoZone to avoid voiding my warranty.
Plus, I've already spent $160 to have the coolant changed and I'd like to avoid doing that again if I can.

| Vibe Problem Jc 08:25:03 |
| | Hi all,
My 2005 Vibe (base with automatic) has had a problem from day one. After sitting at a long red light with the AC on, it hesitates when accelerating from a stop. After the hesitation it is fine.
Today the OEM battery went dead, and the car refused to start...just a series of clicks. This sounds like classic OEM battery replacement time until I checked the charging system. I charged the battery, and the car started right up. With the lights on, and the AC running at max fan speed the battery voltage drops steadily like 12.7....12.6....12.5....and then when I give it some gas it hesitates, and then the voltage is 13.7 volts. Hmmmmmmmm!
Maybe my battery is fine, but my charging system is defective? What do you fine folk think?? I realize that the OEM battery has to go, but I'm not convinced that is the whole problem. That hesitation is a clue.
Regards, Jim

| Front brake calipers sticking Guest 08:22:39 |
| | I replaced both calipers, had my rotors inspected and they do not need to be turned. I also had my brakes professionally bled. When I press the brake pedal I get a loud creeking sound as if there is air in the line and at times the pedal will go to the floor. Is there a way I can check my lines to see if they are collapsed or will I have to take it to a professional.

| | Ok, it has 184,000 on it and the tranny started making a weird grinding noise. Lost all forward and reverse gears. Long story short, I pulled the pan off and found metal shavings in the pan. So much matter of fact, the magnet couldn't hold it anymore. Anyone know what might have happened? Right now, the tranny and eng are almost out. Just need some more info before I rip the tranny open.

| is this the forum for 86 pontiac bonneville questions? Cyberhun 08:14:24 |
| | I bought an 86 pontiac bonneville, and I have a bunch of questions about maintaining it --- is this the right forum, or is this for more up-to-date pontiacs? If this isn't the best forum for these questions, could you suggest an alternative?
I've had my bonneville for almost five months now, driving it a few tens of kilometers every other day or 2, and all it needs is gas (LOTS of gas) --- it doesn't leak any fluids, at all, and almost everything including air-conditioning works perfectly. I love the way it handles --- my friend says it, 'handles like an aircraft carrier'.
In case this is the right forum, I'll just go ahead and ask:
--- How on earth do you get the wire wheel covers off? I tried everythiung I could think of and I don't want to force anything, but if I have a flat right now, as it is, I can't change it because I can't get the wire wheel covers off. I have the jack and the spare tire and the lug wrench, but nothing for removing these darn covers.
---It was tuned up by the seller just prior to the sale, and over the last five months it has slowly become 'un-tuned' and although it still runs just fine (for a 20 yr old engine) it's now starting to make kind of diesel-ish sounds and has lost some power --- how realistic is the idea of tuning up the engine by myself? I've got mechanical aptitude but I've just never worked on autos before. My friend has a garage full of tools he's offerred to let me use --- can you tune up this kind of engine (the smaller V8) with everyday type tools or do you need something really expensive or unusual?
---Sometimes the left turn indicator lights don't flash, the left-turn indicator light just stays on continuously as long as the turn-indicator lever is in the "turning left" position. I noticed there are wires in the trunk that have been screwed with and there's some kind of connector or something black-taped onto the wires. How big a deal is this likely to be to fix myself? I've got a decent multi-meter. Where is the circuit that turns the power off and on to flash the turn indicator light? Is it in/near the steering column or is it integrated into the light itself somehow?
---Sometimes, when it rains, the drivers side window stops working untill the car dries out and then it starts working again.
---Are these cars good for fixing up? This one is in amazingly good shape. The interior is unbeleivably new-looking and there is only one small ding on the bumper. Almost zero rust. This is clearly a wet coast car (no salt damage from salt sprayed on icy roads east of the rockies).

| | Does anybody know where I can get some information on leaking cars, perferably a 01 Pontiac Bonnaville. Is there any information anywhere about this problem? When it rains it pours in on the floorboards. Is it true that a drain hole somewhere could be plugged up? Thanks, Mr. Soggy Carpet

| What performance parts for my '03 Grand Am Guest 00:04:04 |
| | I have a 2003 pontiac grand am SE
I have no problem admitting I know almost nothing when it comes to car performance. My question to anyone who can answer with experience is:
What is a good amount of money to invest in this car to give it a noticable performance boost; and what parts would I need?
I am hoping not to spend more than $2000 However as I already mentioned I know nothing about car performance and am unsure if this amount of money is worth investing into my car.
Any help would be appreciated.

| 94 grand am - auto trans noisy when in DRIVE Larry Ruch 05:54:40 |
| | The engine in this car threw a rod and locked the engine. After replacing the engine, the transmission makes a groaning noise while in forward gear, even when not moving. Sounds okay in Park, Rev, Neutral. The sound is almost like a bare brake shoe grinding on a scored rotor. It's not the brakes or CV joint. It makes noise while sitting still.
The car will move...its been down the street about 500 feet and back since the engine was replaced. I'm afraid to run it since it may cause more damage.
Any ideas what can get damaged with a sudden stop when an engine locks? Other reasons?

Problem: Has run perfectly to this point. Parked it last night. This morning, no start.
It cranks just fine, but not a hint of ignition first time today. Later, it fires for 1/4 second, then nothing.
It acts as if no fuel. This tank has gone 150 miles, still 3/4 tank left.

| 2001 montana level control (air conditioner) failure.. Guest 03:12:47 |
| | So here I am with the wifes "don't you dare touch my van' 2001 Montana, trying to blow air up on the kids bikes.
Throw the key to Acc, and remove the access panel, and hit the on switch. Nothing. Not a peep. Think thats wierd. Take a look at the back of the van - its droopy a bit. ok, alot. Hmm thinking that the level control is messed..
Checking the fuse.. then checked all the fuses and all check out with my DMM. Pull off the back panel, and check the switch. I see that the switch is connected to a relay. Verified that the relay kicks in, and sends 12V out, and that it also charges the solenoid so that air can come out the aux jack. But the compressor never kicks in. Granted this was last night at about 10 pm, so I couldnt poke much further.. She is gone for the weekend, and I am hoping to have alot of some minor problems with her van fixed. Not sure if anything else is related..
- Power door locks dont work. I can unlock with FOB, and when in Drive, it will lock / unlock automatically fine. But if I press unlock on the driver/passenger it wont - Instrument panel lights - gone too. - DRL - gone as well.
Not all of this happend at once, but was pretty recent, since the last time she took my van, and left me with hers.
Anyway, Can someone let me know where to find the compressor on this thing, and what my next step would be - I was thinking to make sure that its getting power, and follow from the relay to it.. but it ducts into the body, and I couldnt see it.
Any help greatly appreciated. John.

| 1998 Pontiac Sunfire - Overhead Lamp won't turn off. Shinnokxz 22:33:26 |
| | Got into my Sunfire after a night with friends to see the courtesy light turn on when the door opens... normal stuff. But it didn't turn off when I closed the door. In fact it stayed on through out my driving and refuses to turn off even with the car in park and turned off. I've opened all the doors and closed them and flicked every imaginable switch on the dash but to no avail. WTH is going on? -- Shinnokxz - http://www.coryhansen.com "I'm sorry. | Key stuck in ignition on Pontiac Bonneville 1996 M Vitaliy 06:33:23 |
| | It's 96, automatic transmission. The key doesn't go into "Lock" position, it stays in off position. It is a spare key. I'm sure the transmission is in parking position (otherwise the car would roll down the hill, I guess). I can start and stop the engine. So, I'm pretty sure it's electronics problem, otherwise it should be just stuck there. Is there some fuse I can remove to make the key go into "Lock" position (that's when you take out the key). Does disconnecting the battery work the same way in this case as removing the fuse? Or is there any other solution without going to see the mechanic?
Thanks.

| 3.4 timing belt replacement Robert -Wanda Fox 08:58:09 |
| | some advice would be greatly appreciated , i have replaced the timing belt on my 3.4 dohc engine(94 grand prix)and having the old belt break all timing points were lost, thier is no valve damage(thank god)but the timing marks(yellow paint on the cam sprocket teeth)appear to be wrong, probally someone else before worked on it,i have had the car scanned at a repair shop because no matter what i did it still appears out of tune, they said all is good with the exeption that it is just out of tune.the cams are not right ,i am sure and the mechanic okayed that my intermediate sprocket, crank marks are right with tdc on no.1,so the trouble is soley with the cams not right, upon many people "guiding me"internet help and a few manuels,i have removed the plenum, cam carrier covers, and have the "flats"on the camshafts facing up and locked down,i have loosened the sprocket bolts on the front cams(closest to front of vehicle)so they are freewheeling, upon putting belt back on and tensioned,i was instructed to rotate assembly by hand 360 degrees(back cams with hold downs off and front still locked down"sprockets freewheeling"then after doing this, tighten front cam bolts down and release the cams to turn with belt,i stopped at this point, but am i on the right track so far????i don't really understand why the front has to be freewheeling for 360 degrees ,then released to complete timing????the book also then mentions something about after this procedure, the back cam flats will be 180 degrees different then the front flats???this also i don't understand,if all flats are face up ,upon 360 degreese, wouldn't they be in unison???? thanks

| 98 GrandPrix GTP AC "issue" GTPOwnerMDA 04:11:31 |
| | My 98 Grand Prix started blowing heated air when the AC is on the other day. The clutch on the compressor is wroking and the line leading into the evaproator (core) is getting icy cold (so the AC system is working). However it's blowing warm/heated air with the AC on. Is there a valve in the dash that controls heated water flow through the heating core when the AC is on? It seems as though this is stuck "open" letting the core get hot the same time the AC core gets cold. Anyone have a similar problem? How do I fix it? Does nayone have a schematic/diagram of the area in question and how to go about fixing it.
-Thanks! Mike

Gran Prix (1996) won't start sometimes gurm 01:12:31 |
| | Hi, I have a 1996 Grand Prix and it occasionally does not start. I thought that it was due to the steering in a lock possition. Bu even when unlocked, it does not start. Lights come on etc. but nothing happens. I wait a few minutes and then it maraculously starts again? Should the tires be in straight position? What am i doing wrong? This has occurred three times. I just bought this and did not get any manual. Would appreciate helpful suggestions. TIA Gurm |

| A/C Issue on 95' Gran Prix Branden Nelsen 23:06:43 |
| | My girlfriends car just started doing this:
If she is Idle the AC blows out full blast fine, nice and cold. However if she accelerates at all almost all circulation from 75 vents stop, once she lets up off the pedal it goes back to normal. I tested it with Cruise control also and same thing happens when the car goes to accelerate on its own. Also while driving any time you are "Cruising" allot without acceleration it works fine.
It basically comes down to anytime the car is accelerating the A/C stops blowing out air.
