99 grand am tranny slipping

Esseldi 17 April 2005 18:32:28
 Hello all,

My problem has confused me. My 99GA slips when I put it from
park/nuetral into drive. This only happens when the car is hot and the
temp outside it 50+. It seems to happen with the first 2 gears then
when it finally catches it will be all good until i need to put it in
park again. Another way that i can go about bypassing this problem is
drive it in 2nd until about 25-30 mph then put it into drive. I have a
3.4L motor. I just had the tranny flushed and a new filter put it but
it hasn’t helped the prob. any other ideas would be helpful

Sounds like the trans is bad. Any codes?
It's probable that you can either spend $2500 now or $3500 in a month or two.

Don't spend a single cent. Take it in for a free road test/checkup and see
what they say. Even if it is slipping I would refrain from getting it fixed
until it completely dies. My cars tranny was slipping a little three years
ago and I was told by the transmission guys that my tranny would last
another month at most. Well 3 years later the thing slips may be once every
two months. Save your money and wait till it blows. Whether they rebuild
it now or later it will still cost the same.

Chris

Cases are expensive. I would not wait for the failure to ruin the case.
... Assuming he has the orig rebuilt and not swapped for a drop-in
rebuilt from a third world country.

no there is no codes the thing I dont get is why does it only happen
on warm days (live in WI) and when the engine is hot. If it was a
tranny dieing on me wouldn’t it happen all the time?

btw thx for the posts

Go to auto parts store. Lucas makes a tranny stuff that will fix it. It
pours like glue but really works. It costs about $9 but is cheaper than
$1500. I have used it in 3 different cars and all 3 cars are still going
with no more problems.

My guess without checking pressures, etc:
Aluminum has a (relatively) high rate of thermal expansion.
When the trans get hot, something is reducing oil pressure to a
part when it expands.
Possible is wear in the valve body, a crack - somewhere - case or otherwise,
worn seal rings, etc.
If it were mine, I would do as tj suggests and try some sort of
sealer stuff - can't hurt - the trans is already bad.
