On vehicles that old it may or may not store the code if the light is
not constant. It's free to find out, assuming you can borrow a paper

My '91 Grand Prix used to do the same thing. I read the codes very often,
but it never came up with any.

 Hi All;

My 1998 Caravan fan belt slipped off when I hit some water in the road.
Not knowing it was off until I noticed the motor heating up. Parked it until
the next day. Replaced the belt and thought it was alright. Next thing I see
is SERVICE ENGINE SOON light. It stayed on and will not go out. What is
wrong and what can be done about it?

You would need to check the fault code to see what is set or just drive the
vehicle and se if the problem resets itself in about a week
