| Montana harmonic balancer DonW 04:32:43 |
| | The OE harmonic balancer failed at 100K miles on the 98 Montana. By failed I mean the outer pulley had moved outward causing belt misalignment. It still drove the various assecessories OK. I replaced it with a Dorman unit that lasted 3 weeks and 2200 miles. It completely failed with the outer pulley completely uncoupled from the inner hub. There's no apparent misalignment in the drive pulleys or does there appear to be excessive drag when the a/c compressor engages. Anyone have multiple harmonic balancer failures? or stated another way...... any experience with "made in China" aftermarket units and their failure rates?

| Re: 1997 Sunfire Starter Wiring Silver Surfer 06:44:13 |
| | I looked at the '96, '97, and '98 Sunfire wiring diagrams. They all show the exact same wiring scheme. The grey/red fusible link goes to the large battery terminal on the solenoid. There is a small purple wire on the solenoid's "S" terminal. No black wire or small red wire show up. Could your "black" wire actually be a purple one? Perhaps you could clean it further back along its length to make sure.
I'm at a loss to explain your small red wire. Does it have a small ring terminal on its end or some other type?

| 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix Cooling System question Guest 02:17:20 |
| | I recently flushed and filled the cooling system of my 2004 Grand Prix per the service manual instructions. The coolant level is full but I hear a 'sloshing' sound when I start and stop the car - it makes me think there's an air gap in there somewhere. When filling the coolant, the manual said to open the bleeder screws (plural). I could only find one (on the thermostat housing) so I think I messed up the procedure. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the 'sloshing' sound? |

| The Key, It Won't Come Out.... Raddion 20:44:58 |
| | Hi everybody, I have a question....
My sister has a 2000 Grand Prix, and the ignition key won't come out, the ignition won't turn all the way to the "off" position even in park. I guess it's probably a shift interlock system problem, so first I'd like to try and see if something's wrong with the adjustment. Does anyone know if the interlock cable on this vehicle is adjusted at the shifter, or is it adjusted at the steering column? It looks like a bit of a bummer to try and penetrate the center console, so I sort of hope it's adjusted at the column! (But I doubt it)
thanks in advance
Raddion

| 2.4l 98 Grand Am Sounding Like a Diesel for a few seconds to Minutes Jeffrae 05:41:57 |
| | When I first start up the car it sounds like a diesel until I give it a little gas..
At first I thought maybe the lifters or something were starting to get noisy, but it isn't temperature related.. IT can be cold as hell and not do it one day but do it the next..
IT can be warm and do it or not..
It goes away as soon as I give it a nice amount of gas...
It seams like it take more gas recently to make the sound go away...
Once it goes away it sounds normal..
Any Ideas?

| 95 Grand Prix overdrive behaves like neutral GrandPrixNewbie 03:49:25 |
| | My GP is mint with only 85,000Km. It's powered by a 3100 and geared via 4T60-E.
When running in overdrive (D) the RPMs stay around 3000 at 100Km per hour. The transaxle never shifts to overdrive.
When forcing it out of 3rd, by easing off the accelerator going down a hill, the transaxle behaves as if it's in neutral. ie: the RPMs drop to idle rate and you can rev the engine, watching the tach needle go up and down.
Dropping it manually into 3rd causes the RPMs to immediately jump up to meet the rate of travel.
My t-fluid is clean and at the right level.
I'm suspecting computer/electrical troubles because there's another issue: the cruise fuse under the hood was missing when I purchased this car just days ago, and replacing it causes the "lights on" chime to activate when turning off the car and exiting. The lights are actually on very dimly too.
I had to pull the fuse again to avoid this. I can live without cruise, but would love to have my overdrive.

| The 17th problem! Travis King 00:16:13 |
| | 1988 Pontiac 6000 2.5L. 124,313 miles.
You're probably getting tired of me whining about my car, but I can't help myself. (Or the car can't help itself.) Heck, you probably get some laughs out of these posts... So anyway, here we go again...
My car has its 17th problem now. (Yes, that would be 17 things that are wrong with the car right now.) This probably won't be enough to give you the information you'll need, but it's worth a shot. It's yet another leak. (I've probably had ten leaks alone with that car.) This fluid kind of has a brownish-transparent color. It's slick. I would say oil except my oil is pretty black right now since it needs changed. It left a nice size stream (Probably at least a foot long stream about an inch and a half wide) of this fluid in the driveway today when I moved it before we went to the store. It didn't seem to me that this fluid had a smell, but then again, maybe that's because I only got a small sampling on my finger. I looked under the car and saw where the fluid was leaking down at, but I don't know for sure where it's coming from. That means I have three fluid leaks right now. The antifreeze, the transmission, and this leak. Maybe it is oil, but it at least is pretty dark on the dipstick and if it is the oil, this will have been the third time it's leaked since I've had the car. (Not quite two years - although it's been in the family for almost ten.) It blew the valve cover gasket twice almost in a row, so we used silicone. After the silicone, why would it start leaking again if it is indeed the oil? I've been getting around fine without oil leaks using the silicone for over a year and a half now. My oil level was past the full mark, but the engine was warm, so I didn't get an accurate measure. I'll check it soon when it's cold. All I can tell you for sure is the leak was sitting under the passenger half of the car in the front.
The antifreeze in the reservoir was about a half an inch above the 'Add' line, but it was not warmed up all the way - the engine was warm, but not at it's normal temperature when it's warmed all the way up.
Before you tell me to get rid of my car (which I know I should), I would like to within a year - if it will make it that long...
Oh well, the car was free when I got it and it's purpose was just to get me by until I could get something better. (At least that was my mom's idea. My dad still says "oh, it's not that bad - we haven't given it a tune up in a while" "it wouldn't cost that much to fix it". This is coming from somebody who hates 4 cylinder engines and always complained about the 2.5 and said that he would never let anyone ever buy a four-cylinder engine again. I don't think he's actually ever considered everything that's wrong with it. There are 4-cylinder engines out there that are pretty reliable, but the 2.5 is not one of them at least with the Celebrity we used to have and this car. After dealing with the lackluster power of this engine, I'd probably get a V6 engine in my next vehicle, although if I feel comfortable with getting a 4-cylinder engine (since most of them do have more power than the 2.5), I'll be getting one. I don't need lots of power even as a teen, but I do want something that has enough power to go up an incline at 65mph without really pushing hard on the gas pedal. On this car, if you spend $900 on it, you're already spending about the amount of its value - considering its condition.) Dad hasn't complained that much about my car after he bought his gas-guzzling Blazer (which he's spent $5000 on it in repairs in the past year and a half) and the gas prices have doubled.
I will now stop rambling.
Thanks.

| | Hello,
I own a 2002 Grand Am. My problem is that the Security Light will come on intermittently when drive. Soon thereafter, when attempting to start the car it will not crank over. To correct the problem I was told to attempt cranking the engine. If it failes to crank then turn the key to the off position and then back to on. The Security Light will go off after about 10 minutes. It will then crank. What is causing the problem??? Help!!!!
