Peugeot 406 2.0 litre Lx Cambelt

just4funUK 20 April 2005 23:08:32
 Brought the car above.
What sort of price would you expect to pay to get the cambelt changed?

From Peugeot Franchise?
Independent garage?

How many people here woud make this a priority after buying a Peugeot
if they had no information when it was last changed.

Thanks

Depends on the mileage. You dont know how it was driven before and so
you dont know whether to change it or not. If its done between 50k to
60k miles then I would consider changing it. Normally petrols are due
about the 60k to 70k mark anyway.

Prices to change it

Belt - normally less than £20
Fitting - Peugeot - £90 to £120 ish
Fitting - garage - £60 ish

Depends, but bear in mind the belt normally less than £20

Hope this helps

Lets see if they are the same

Most of the Peugeot franchise quoting between £250-£280 just for cam
belt to be changed.

Had a independent garage give me a quote of £135+VAT
which looks like will be the place I will be taking my 406.

Isn't there a tensioner that should be changed as well while you (or the
garage) are at it? And perhaps the water pump?

It's a 4 hour book time job for Peugeot garages, thus nearly £300. If
you have an independent to do it, make sure he uses a Good quality
belt, preferably a Peugeot one. Assuming yours is the XU10J4 engine
then the tensioner should be ok. If it's the EW10J4 , then the
tensioner MUST be changed. The water pump will need changing if it is
showing signs of leaking, only visible when the covers are off. I
suppose you could do some preventative measures and change it anyway.
Will probably add a half hour to the job. Plus the price of the pump
and anti freeze.

Peugeot do a cambelt 'kit' that comes with the belt, tensioner and new
bolts etc.
