306 starter motor solenoid problem

Southwalespug 20 April 2005 17:45:09
 i own a 306 non turbo diesel.

Recently i have been finding it difficult to turn the engine over, it just
goes 'click'.

I have an ai606 toad cat 1 alarm on there, was working fine and then
started to deteriorate.

Is it my solenoid? motor? please help

Cheers all, Ian

Sounds very much like a knackered battery.

Is it my solenoid?

Sticky starter, and/or sticky solenoid.

They're very cheap from your local motorfactor - just replace it.

Sounds very much like a knackered battery.

But then it would still turn over, albeit very slowly - unless the battery
was TOTALLY flat (unlikely). If he's just getting a click, and no other
action, then it can only be the starter really !

No it wouldn't - not if a cell or two have gone off duty (and it can happen
pretty suddenly). If in doubt, turn on headlights, activate starter. If
the lights go out, it's probably battery.

Anyway, he says it isn't the battery, which leaves bad contacts somewhere,
solenoid u/s or grotty starter. I think that's just about where he came
in...

Used to get this problem years ago. It is normally caused by
dirty/loose/corroded battery terminals. Undo them, clean thoroughly (emery
paper is good) and coat in Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) before reassembling.
