| 306 radio code Pug gettin me down! via CarKB.com 12:46:38 |
| | Hi Hi,
I'm a girl so appologies if I get all my car terms all wrong and stuff!!!
I had a huge wiring problem on my pug 306 (L reg), i.e. I had a huge burn out and it caused my radio, heater and fans, central locking and imobiliser thing to not work, pug garage said I was very lucky my car didn't start on fire so I'm very fortunate that THAT didn't happen! Anyhow, I didn't have the code for the radio and asked them to look into it for me but they said I didn't have a serial number on the side of the radio (How Strange as its the original radio!!!) so they couldn't find it out for me, I've been told that the VIN number on my car should be enough for me to get the code.... Is this correct or am I a lost cause?! I've rung up PUG too to see if they could find the code just on car model and reg but they couldn't find it!
I am at a loss just now.....
Can anyone offer me any suggestions!?!?!
Sad pug owner!

| battery light Johnb 06:46:56 |
| | Can anyone help with a problem concerning the charging light on a P 106. I've just fitted a new battery and a new alternator after the old alternator was found to be faulty. Problem: The charging light glows faintly on and off even though the battery is charging. The alternator belt is tight so I'm at a loss.

| peugeot 306 sedan 1999 Dave-Spain 19:43:25 |
| | Hi there
This is my first post so i apologise if this has allready been posted.
As you can tell by my nick i live in Spain now, formerley the uk, the problem i have is i bought a 99, 306 sedan, tried today to fit a cd player, there was an existing sony cassette player someone had fitted into the car, and the wiring is a total bodge job. Living in spain i cant get a manual for the car, my problem now is ive tried wiring the new cd player but have shortcircuited or blown a fuse for the central locking, ive located the fuse board no problem, but there is no diagram telling me which fuse is which. has anyone got a diagram that cantell me which fuse is which (ie no1 horn...etc). The existing radio was connected to a live pink wire (yes i know pink, i had to look twice) i have a feeling this wire is for the c/locking or immobilizer, but saying that it was connected to the existing radio. If i can find the fuse on the board for both c/locking and radio, i will then be able to rewire radio and solve c/locking problem i hope.
any help would be appreciated, i just hope i havent blown the new cd player aswell!!!!!!!

| Symbol on Dash Board ?? What is it ? Fed Up Young Lady Driver 09:14:47 |
| | Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what a symbol is on the dash, I have no handbook for my 406 GTX 110 Diesel Pug. It comes on after I have turned the engine on for about 3 seconds so have only had a brief look at the symbol. Its above the water temp dial and lights red looks like 3 wavy lines with a line over the top. Like I say it only comes on after the engine is turned on for about 3 seconds and then goes off. Dreading the answer to this but does anyone know what the symbol is, this car has had so much done to it and so many problems dreading the answer! Many thanks

| 306 D Turbo Starts on 3 Cyliners Guest 18:45:56 |
| | Okay this one is confusing me now. Seen a few posts saying the same thing.
Car starts and runs very lumpy with what seems like only 3 cylinders firing. This is accompanied by black and white smoke which gives and sort of grey as the mix. A few seconds and it clears and all is fine, alternatively blip the throttle and it clears. It always clears with a puff of black smoke. The cold makes the situation worse.
I have replaced all the glowplugs but still suffer from the problem. Car is a 95 with 84K miles on the clock.
I suspected worn injectors but have been adviced to get a compression test. Spoke to local garage and they say there is no point as if it were low compression it would run on 3 cyliners constanly (not so sure about that).
Here is the starnge thing, I have found (purely by accident) that if I give the priming pump a couple of pumps before I cold start it, the problem does not seem to occur. I get a tiny bit of smoke, but it does not run on 3 cylinders. What does this suggest? Injector pump?
Don't know where else to go with this one, so any help would be much appreciated. Using the process of elimination on this sort of thing can be expensive, time consuming and inconclusive, so any suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks all in advance, Adam

| EGR valve on HDI engine and fuel consumption. Brian 10:07:56 |
| | I have seen many references to this valve, and the fact that if disabled, can improve fuel consumption considerably. Does anyone know if this is also true on the HDI (in my case a 110 in a 307SW), or does the computer get its knickers in a twist? At todays fuel prices it is worth looking at any way to reduce consumption. Also, although the EGR system is supposed to reduce pollution, I doubt if it does better rhan a 10% reduction in fuel used per mile, and thus a similar reduction in exhaust emmissions. Brian.

| Re: Key copied for pug 405 cheaper than dealer (remote built in) Greg 00:34:48 |
| | Thanks for the tips guys,
It isn't a seperate remote, the remote is built into the key and is the same as in most 106's and 306's. I don't know if it's possible somehow to 'recode' a 2nd hand key? It's the infa red type. I can't simply lock the door as the remote arms the alarm, locking the door doesn't. Plus I like things to work. A spare key that won't diarm the car isn't any good sadly
Greg.

| Re: '96 405 factory alam malfunction - no siren Greg 23:47:10 |
| | Hi Bob/anyone reading this in the future,
Your memory was pretty good - I unbolted the switch from the slam panel of the car to allow me a bit more working room and stripped the insulation leading to it back 6in and also carefully stripped back the rubber weather sealing where the wires go into the switch.
Hey presto, a security loop, a single wire which appears to do nothing and 2 wires connected to the swich. All wires are coloured white. I pulled out the loop and the single wire and laid them aside, now facing a switch with just 2 wires therefore a simple closed/open contact arrangement. I established with multimeter that open circuit = alarm siren on and closed contact (the 2 wires to the switch joined together) = alarm siren off.
So I simply cut one wire off the switch and taped it up, making the alarm siren permanantly on. I then taped all the wires up again so it looked back to factory, or near enough, with good insulation tape. I then fitted the switch back on the slam pannel with a new stainless bolt.
I could have put a switch on, but I figured I never want the alarm off, if I do I can simply lock the car by the key in the door which doesn't arm the alarm (as opposed to using the remote in the key, which locks the doors and arms the alarm).
Tested the alarm and all is now good, including a chav-warning beep when I lock/arm it!
Many thanks for the pointers from Bob, whom without I may have just cut through the security loop! Greg.

You should be able to look up the correct battery for the car in Halfords >> reference guides.> so am right its the amps not the volts? Certainly heavy duty batteries have a higher amp/hour figure. Incidentally, last year we got a new heavy duty battery from Halfords for my wife's 306TD which was on special offer at about ё60. Since then I have been looking around for one for my 406HDI as the current one is 8 years old and must be on borrowed time. I found that I can get the correct battery (Bosch) from Costco for ё34. | 99 206 XSi - Tapping/knocking from engine Tom 17:42:47 |
| | Hi
I have posted about this before but now i have more info on the noise!! It seems to be coming from the rear (induction) side of the motor. It rises and falls with the revs and it a tapping/knocking type of noise. All pulleys are quiet and listening to the cam that also seems quiet.
Any ideas as to the source of this noise? Engine has done 67k and is not using any fluids, apart from petrol of course...

| 405 Diesel apparent overheating Pugman 14:31:48 |
| | Noticing whisps of steam from the air vents, I diagnosed Heater matrix leak. Added a radiator weld additive, which seemed to cure immediate problem temporarily. Changed the matrix, bled the system, run car to allow fan to kick in 3 times and then idle for a few minutes. Allowed to cool, opened cap, topped up to max level and took for 50 mile test drive. Once cool, opened cap, everthing OK!. Drove for a week, approx 500 miles. Checked coolant level when cold. Upto top of expansion vessel. Bled system and continued to drive. Checked two days later level OK. So continue to check levels on daily basis, with having to vent pressure from cap before removing. With continued checks, noticed that eventually relieving through radiator cap is evident whilst running. However, no indications from gauges, smell or feel that engine is overheating. (This week stuck in traffic for 2 1/2 hours with no signs of overheating. At the weekend, after 8 hours from turning engine off, when checking fluid level, had to release pressure (coolant cold!). Its got me baffled as the system seems to be working OK. Pulled over the other day, let idle for 5-6 minutes, cooling fan kicked in and didn't restart within the next 5 mins. No evidence of oil in the water and no water in the oil. Head gasket immediate thoughts, but why has the car not seized, or shown signs or smeels associated with overheating. Any suggestions?

| 406 suspension clunk Malc 00:43:37 |
| | Hi all
There is a very slight clunk form the front suspension when I hit a pot hole. In my old Xantia and XM the usual cause was a worn drop link. Do the 406s have drop links? Haynes BoL doesn't make it clear.
