Peugeot 307 Transmission failure

Amagonian 11 August 2006 15:27:14
TO ALL 307 OWNERS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF YOUR TRANSMISSION
WITHIN 110,000 or in 3 years? I have!!!!

I had to write the following message (excerpt shown below) to Peugeot
Citroen Automoniles UK which I believe is the headquarters for Peugeot
in the UK .
Dear Sirs,

The transmission of my Peugeot 307 Hatchback has failed and needs to be
replaced as confirmed by the authorized dealer in Trinidad and Tobago -
City Motors Ltd. The car is only 3 years old and at 103,000 miles
approx. I believe it may well be one of the few 307's if not the only
one whose transmission has failed completely in such a short time. I
have twice requested the local dealer to waive completely all costs
associated with the replacement of this transmission but to no avail. I
cannot believe that the reputable Peugeot brand can produce
transmissions that fail in such a short time. There could well be a
major manufacturer's error in producing this particular transmission.
While I am appealing to your office to approve a complete waiver of the
costs quoted by City Motors for replacement of the transmission
($23,375 TT ) I also think that this feedback to you would assist in
enabling a correction of the manufacturer's error. I have also not
even been offered a courtesy vehicle for the entire period -July-3rd,
2006 to July 26th, 2006 and continuing since the car has been in the
service shop. I believe that you can do something to assist me and I
thank you for your consideration. If necessary I can forward copies of
the correspondence engaged in between myself and City Motors Ltd

With Best Regards.

LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE HAS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND WHAT WE CONSUMERS
ARE DOING WRONG!!!

You haven't said if the car is within the 3 year warranty. 103,000 miles is
in 3 years is pushing it a bit. How come? Is it a taxi?

Sorry, I don't understand this. You are in Finland, yet you say your
Peugeot dealer is in Trinidad and Tobago. What is going on here?
I am not disputing that your transmission may have failed, but more
information about the failure and why it is not down to your driving habits
might be more likely to produce a helpful response from Peugeot. I know
from my own experience that, given a good Peugeot dealer and a reasonable
case, the factory will stump up for quite considerable sums of money - in my
case the substitution of 16" wheels and new tyres for the 15" worn ones on
my 807. Peugeot's attitude to your problem is probably that anyone can
wreck one of their transmissions in 180,000km if they try hard enough (and
they're probably right) and if you want any recompense from them you will
have to prove it was their fault, not yours.

Ah. That explains a lot. I blame the homebrew - very handy excuse, but the
hot weather has been playing all sorts of tricks with it lately.

But that is not the case in Trinidad, it's a relatively small island
(compared to the size of Finland).

Transmission is said to be an AL4. A serial number ? 2222 VS was shown
on the estimate received from the Dealer.

 Hello and Thenk you Ron,

No I do not live in Finland- It reallly was "some other bloke". The car
is not a taxi and yes I do have a lot of trips to make even though
Trinidad is not as large as Finland. It makes the lack of a courtesy
car more painfully inconvenient. I take your point about driving habits
as the possible cause. However the thing is that the transmission
always had rough gear changes when the car is slowing down. The dealer
never completely addressed this during services and I feel this could
have contributed to the failure. There was an attempt to replace the
"solenoid valves" in the transmission when I took it to the shop after
getting the "AUTOMATIC GEAR FAULT " reading but that did not solve the
problem. This is as much as I can say now. If there are other owners
who have exprienced the rough changes I would like to know and what
happened with them. Anyway I would like to hear from "ilkka.maatta"
-FINLAND on what happened with their car. Did the transmission fail
during its 3 year guarantee period or after and did Peugeot replace the
transmission free of charge?
