Maserati wanted to have a taste in sportscar endurance racing in the
American Le Mans Series as a GT class competitor. The MC12 was approved
for competition by the Federation Internationale De L'Automobile (FIA)
and thus the factory-owned team could compete in FIA GT racing events;
however, they really wanted to compete in North America.

The ALMS runs under The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA)
umbrella and under the regulations set forth by the Automobile Club de
l'Quest (ACO) -- the sanctioning body for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. All
road cars that compete in the ALMS under homologation by the ACO are
allowed to run for championship rights and an invite to Le Mans. The
MC12 does not meet the ACO requirements.
