 At the end of the first day of the Swedish Rally, Petter Solberg holds
second position overall, just 0.2 seconds off Marcus Gronholm's overall
lead. Demonstrating an impressive pace aboard his Subaru Impreza WRC2004,
the Norwegian took two stage wins and set a string of top-three times.
Making their Swedish Rally debuts with the team, Chris Atkinson and Stephane
Sarrazin concentrated on gaining experience of the specialist conditions in
their Impreza WRCs. Building in confidence with every stage, the pair ended
the Leg well inside the top-20 and are looking for further improvement
tomorrow.

 Leg one of Rally Sweden proved disappointing and
frustrating for Subaru World Rally Team drivers Petter Solberg and Chris
Atkinson. Last year's winner Solberg ended the day 21st overall
after mechanical problems prevented him from showing the potential of the
new Impreza WRC2006. An impressive start for Chris Atkinson came to an
end on the first corner of SS3 when a collision with a tree broke his
car's power steering rack. Atkinson paid a heavy price for the
mistake and dropped more than five minutes as he negotiated the rest of
the loop with no power assistance. He ended the day in 26th place.

 The Subaru World Rally Team came to Sweden to secure more solid points
finishes and ended the first leg of the event with one car firmly in the
top three and the other one just outside the top eight. Petter
Solberg/Phil Mills seized the outright lead of the rally on the opening
stage of the day, and stayed among the frontrunners, ending the leg third
overall. Chris Atkinson/Glenn Macneall planned to make a cautious start
to what is only their third snow rally, but steadily upped their pace
during the day and finished leg one just 3sec away from a points-scoring
position.

The Swedish Rally kicked off on Thursday night with a short Super Special
stage on the horse trotting track in the host city of Karlstad. Crews
tackled the floodlit stage in pairs, with Chris Atkinson up against
Manfred Stohl, and Petter Solberg taking on his brother, Henning. Times
were extremely close over the 1.9km stage, but Petter ended the day as
the leading Subaru, setting the third-fastest time. Chris cleared the
stage with the 13th fastest time.
