Canadian Champ Car team is a go go go
Eric Jensen signs sponsors and (secret) driver

Race entrepreneur will run entire schedule

NORRIS MCDONALD

Eric Jensen of Toronto, the 35-year-old owner of teams in the Toyota Atlantic
and Formula BMW series, has changed his mind about entering a car this year in
"four or five" Champ Car World Series races in July and August.

He will, instead, run one car in all of the Champ Car races this season,
starting with the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 10.

This is huge news for the series and its fans because it shows Champ Car to be
on the march. After a near-death experience last winter, the series rebounded
in 2004 and is poised to break through this year, particularly because of more
cars entered, a stellar driver lineup and a new television contract with CBS
and Speed Channel in the U.S.

TSN and Global, as we all know, have always been staunch supporters of the
series in Canada.

Jensen, in his inimitable style, made the grand announcement to me exclusively,
via email.

"Big news,'' he wrote. "We should talk.'' So we talked.

He said the deal came together in the last 10 days. "I talked to several
people, then I talked to a few more, did some calculating, came to the
conclusion that the whole thing was doable, and here we are. I'm thrilled. It's
the realization of a dream.''

He said his team will be sponsored in Canada by Konica-Minolta, the film and
camera people. He said he has U.S. sponsors lined up but "because they're
American, I want to wait until Long Beach to make those public."

He will also wait before making another important announcement: the driver.

"The driver is the least of my worries,'' he laughed, saying there are any
number of talented chauffeurs on the market, but that he has plenty of other
things to worry about first.

He emphasized that, although he's driven in Indy Lights and Toyota Atlantic, it
won't be him.

"No way,'' he said. "I'm going to be too busy getting a team together,'' adding
that he plans to augment his existing Toyota Atlantic crew with experienced
people from the ranks of Champ Car and Formula One.

"The driver is 70 per cent of the equation,'' he said, "but you need a solid,
professional team to back him up. You need good mechanics who can prepare the
car, who can take it apart between races and rebuild it. You need good
engineers who can set the car up, trim it out and make it perform to its
capacity.''

Jensen, who is a familiar figure in F1 circles because of another of his
businesses, hosting corporate groups at Grand Prix events, says he's already
been approached by some F1 team members about making the switch.

"Several have said to me over the years that when I made the move up (to Champ
Cars) that they'd like to come over (from Europe). It's a pretty demanding
environment in F1. After a couple of years of it, a lot of guys are looking for
a change to something that isn't as stressful.

"Champ Car is less stressful and a heck of a lot more fun, so I'm looking to
hire some pretty good guys. I expect to have about a dozen people on the
payroll by Long Beach.''

Jensen, who hopes to introduce his driver at the end of the month as part of a
Molson Indy press promotions day, also said he didn't want anything to take
away attention from the announcement of his sponsor.

Said Jensen: "This is a good-news story about a major Canadian corporation
joining up with a Canadian-owned racing team to run a full-season in one of the
world's great racing series that is of great importance to Canada.

"Champ Car is the one series that reaches just about all of Canada. The top
Canadian drivers are in Champ Car. We're in the key cities of Edmonton, Toronto
and Montreal. In comparison, Formula One is only in Montreal and NASCAR doesn't
race here.''

Konica-Minolta has a summer-long promotion planned in which the purchasers of
single-use cameras, film and digital cameras can win either a 2005 Ford Mustang
or a trip to the 2006 Long Beach GP.

"The chance at the Mustang is a good tie-in with Ford, because our cars are
powered by Ford-Cosworth engines,'' Jensen said.

"And this partnership (with Konica-Minolta) emphasizes the importance of Champ
Car in the Canadian market and is a perfect illustration of how a Canadian
company can use auto racing to market its products.''

I want you to know that Jensen doesn't just spout this stuff: he believes it.

I've known him for years and he never stops working, never stops spreading the
word that motorsport gives its sponsors a bigger bang for their buck than any
of the other major-league sports and that, of all the series out there to
choose from, Champ Car is the way to go.

This step up is the culmination of many years of planning, dedication,
nose-to-the-grindstone hard work and never taking "no" for an answer.

While others in the motorsports business might take a day or two off to rest
and relax, Jenson doesn't. You might find him on a beach or a ski hill, but you
can bet that there's somebody nearby that he wants to talk to, to do business
with.

Oh, and while he hasn't decided on whether to continue with a team in the
Toyota Atlantic series, he's already signed three drivers to compete this year
in Formula BMW: Daniel Harrington, 18, of Winston-Salem, N.C., John Zartarian,
18, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Jules Duc, 15, of Los Gatos, Calif.

Like I said, he never stops.

Given that he's already had a concussion, I wouldn't be
surprised if that were exactly the case.
