Pseudo OT: Congrats Paul!

Forty 1 October 2007 18:12:44
Paul Newman won a well-fought GT1 victory at the SCCA NARRC Runoffs at
Lime Rock. The guy is unbelievable. He's blowing the doors off of guys
1/4th his age.

Oh, and Blue-flagging from outpost at station 12 (driver's left on the
front straight just a little past pit-in) is one hell of a way to
experience the race. Under 10 ft from the racing line with cars coming
at you @ 130-140 MPH. I could smack the windshield with the flag if I
wanted :-D

SCCA Club Race on TV? Sorry, it won't happen. However, if Paul goes to
the Runoffs in Topeka you should be able to see that race on Speed. I
don't remember if I read about them airing them again this year, but I
think it should happen.

Wow, that's extremely impressive. Lime Rock is pretty physical.

The odd thing is that he sometimes needs help getting in and out of the
car. However, once he's in, he doesn't miss a beat. Outstanding.

Good for him. Newman is a man's man and more importantly, doesn't seem to
think he's more important than anybody else because he's a movie star. I'm
really
not a fan of any of his movies but I definitely respect the guy.

Paul Newman? There isn't a celebrity of consequence combined with being a
massive contributor to charity, legendary actor, latter day race car driver and
champion (is 35 too old to start?) and a sucker who has been married to a woman
longer than anyone here was alive!

My first time seeing him race was when he was in Trans-Am with the Nissan team
at the Detroit Grand Prix weekend a couple of decades ago.

When he was behind the wheel of the number 70 Porsche 911 at Daytona in 1995
and wearing his age on the car number (70), I cheered him on!

He won his class!

The guy is like a God to me.

Then, the other day, I was bored and watched "The Hustler" from 1961.

Wow!

Paul Newman knows Lime Rock well. It's his "native" track. On the other hand,
a guy like him who is 82, racing well and winning; will never become un cool.

If you're not a fan of his flicks, I recommend "The Hustler", with Jackie
Gleason as Minnesota Fats".

1961.

Forza PLN. The guy is a Real Racer.

Those of us on this side of the Atlantic will remember fondly Gerry
Marshall. Gerry's knees had long since given up the ghost (mind you
he was a big man) and he often walked with the aid of two sticks,
but he was still racing into his sixties and still winning in *very*
hairy machinery.

Fair enough but check out 'Absence of Malice', 1982. How he did not
win the OSCAR for that still boggles my mind.
