1977 280ZX Gasoline Smell

Al Hugueny via CarKB.com 16 April 2005 08:45:28
My neighbor has taken her 280ZX to 3 mechanics to find the cause of a
strong gasoline smell (no visible leaks). The smell is so strong, she must
leave her garage door open for an hour after parking the car. The car is
well tuned, runs normally, and developed the problem a couple of months
ago. Three mechanics (one very good one) have been unable to solve the
problem. Has anyone else experienced this?? Thanks.

Could be the fuel tank vent hoses on the top of the tank. Probably have to
remove the tank to get to them. There also are vent hoses inside the car
going to the vapor tank in the left rear quarter panel area.

I've had this problem- many times. In my case, it's always a leaking fuel
injector seal. The gas evaporates in the heat. The problem has to get
pretty bad before it is visible. I'm going through this right now on my
'83.
