New tires: Kumho ECSTA ASX or Falken ZE-512

Arif 1 May 2005 01:42:27
Looking for new tires for an 03 Maxima - 225/50/17. I am leaning towards
the Kumho ECSTA ASX based on good online reviews, but also considering
Falken ZE-512 and even Hankook
Ventus HRII H405. Please let me know of any good or bad experiences with
these.. Thanks.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. TOTALLY SKIP THE KUMHO ECSTA. NOT WORTH THE
DEGRADATION OF RIDE/HANDLING/WEAR/NOISE. VERY POOR TIRE FOR A MAXIMA.

I put some ventus K104's on my old Z and they seem like good tires, they
handle great.

Not familiar with those specific tire models, but Falken Azenis RT-215's
on my 95 SE work great. They are a bit small because the only size I
could find for my 15" wheels were 205-50/15. Before that I had 225-60/15
Firestone SZ-50's that worked great in the rain. Before that I had
215-60/ZR15 BFG Comp/TA's.

But I have a Pathfinder for winter, so the last decent all season car
tires I bought were BFG VR-4's for my 89 T-bird years ago. The Goodyear
RSA all weather tires that came on my Maxima were a joke (OK in snow, but
just as slippery dry).

Totally disagree. This is what I have on an '03 SE and they rock. As far
as road noise, unless you're
filling them to 39lbs psi, they're whisper quiet.

I just went through a set of Falken 512's on my '96 I30, and they
stuck to the road like glue. Way better handling and smoother ride
than the more expensive Yokohamas I just got (I needed new tires
before a long road trip, and the tire store screwed up the order for
the Falkens).

However, the Falkens only lasted for 30K miles. Or is that normal?

Kumho brand is very agressively seeking market share in USA. Their corporate
level customer service is exemplary.
Falken brand made its name selling retreads. 30k miles is probably just
slightly better than average (for a sticky street tire).
