94 Altima, rough at low RPMs/high load

Guest 8 April 2005 05:28:27
I have a 94 Alitma with around 160K miles that runs rough at low RPMs,
especially under some load (like at idle, in drive with my foot on the
break.) It'll also stutter and complain at low RPMs while climbing a
hill. If I leave O/D off, I usually have no problems.

The problem seems to go away at around 2000 RPM. When it happens, the
engine will run normally for about 10-15 seconds, then start to stutter
and shake for about 5 seconds. It'll keep doing this at idle.

Some information: I had TPS and CSPS errors a few months ago. I
replaced the sensors, following the instructions exactly. The codes no
longer come up. Around the same time, I discovered that the distributor
was full of oil. I read that this happens from time to time in these
cars when an O-ring in the distributor fails. I replaced the
distributor, but didn't do any timing adjustments. Rather, I just made
an effort to line everything up exactly.

Around 9 months ago, I replaced the knock sensor. After buying the
sensor, I realized that you all but have to remove the engine to
replace it. So, just to satisfy the computer, (and hopefully solve some
unrelated rough-engine problems I was having at the time.) I removed
the connector, leaving the old sensor in place, connected the new
sensor and just tie-wrapped it in an out-of-the-way place. The computer
no longer throws the code ;-)

I do plan get a timing light and check things out this weekend, but I
wondered if anyone had suggestions for what else I should be checking
out. It's my wife's car, and she's on the verge of demanding a new car.
Can't have that!

Thanks.
