Best Driver Criteria... Was: Plate track changes?

Now to drag this post, kicking and screaming, back on topic:> we've got the same kind of questions bothering us about> evaluating the skills of a particular driver when all other> factors are held constant in our imaginations, as much as> possible. Who is the real King? Petty? DE Sr.? JG?> Tony Stewart? Michael Schumacher? How would some> other driver have done if he'd gotten JG's seat with> Hendrix?>

ok. I'll play on this. I was thinking about this the other day when I was
watching Mark Martin pull second place in the iroc series. Everyone says
that equipment and crew can make a big difference and make an average driver
good, and a good driver a champion... So if you want to know who the best
DRIVER is, pick a serious where everything else is identical.

So wouldn't that put Mark Martin as one of the best "drivers?" After all,
he's dominated the IROC series and it's a series where everything is
identical... it's all left to the driver.

That's one of the arguments in MM's favor.

If he wins even one Cup, that'll elevate him.

I like the guy. I like his driving style. I like his name and
his initials. I like Fords. He hasn't been as good in
Cup as he has in other series. He does better in
smaller cars (ASA, Busch, IROC).

Except - it's a series run entirely on big paved ovals, with heavy
stock-body cars, with no participation from F1, WRC, F3000, etc.
So it definately favors a driver with the "right" sort of background.

And then you're left with the question of why does Martin get
better results in IROC than in the other series for heavy stock
body cars running on big paved ovals?
