Leffler is not a ROTY contender. If you've left that prediction open to
anyone that has not lost their rookie status, it's got to be a gimmie. I'm
sure 2 one-off, part time, occasional, hanger-on cars finish 1 lap down in
every single race.

There are 4 official rookies this year, Kyle Busch, Kvapil, Stanton Barrett,
Eric McClure. One of those finished a lap down.

Submitted for peer review.

I gotta agree with Russ.
Leffler's rookie year was 2001, he ran 30 races in the #01 (was the #42
and has since changed back) owned by Chip Ganassi.
When I see "rookie" I automatically take that to mean ROTY contenders.

Maybe a rule is in order

Oh man, I just sounded like NASCAR. Shoot me.

The original prediction was opened to any rookie contender. Her
afterstatement should not be accounted for as part of the prediction because
that can work both ways in some instances (positive & negative). Kvapil was
in a wreck so that qualifies as one of the two she predicted. Now, I don't
know what happened to Barrett to why he was many laps down. I don't recall
he being in a wreck. If I am incorrect that will qualify as her second
rookie that would apply to the prediction. Busch, however, went a lap down
because of a loose wheel I believe in which he went a lap down for the extra
pit stop. Busch would not qualify as the second rookie per her prediction.
From what I know then, she would not receive the point because only one
rookie was involved in a wreck that went a lap down. If anyone knows more
about Barrett, let review that aspect. Any takers?

Leffler is not a ROTY contender. ...

Does the word "rooky" in the prediction only mean "candidate
for ROTY"?

I think the of the two separately. One group (newbies to
the Cup level) includes the other (those who are planning
a ROTY campaign).

If Leffler had a yalla stripe, I'd say he's a rookie. On those
grounds I would grant the point.

Which brings us to the other prong of your argument: that
there must be two yalla-stripers down a lap in every race.
That does seem gimmeish, as you say.

Now we pose the gimme-police challenge: shouldn't that have
been caught in the pre-race inspection? Didn't I pay you
$900 to inspect that RPG? Other people get to revise their
gimmes before races--why not me? Are you treating me
differently from other drivers on the track? etc., etc.

I just flipped a quarter. The quarter says Julia gets the point
this time. If she tries to run this scam again, we will shame
her mercilessly. :o)

uhm. if the point is awarded because "it wasn't caught before the race" then
I want my point back that was disallowed ;)

Ok then, if the prediction was 2 or more people in the broad category of
rookie not limited to roty contenders will be a lap down, again, that's a
sure thing.

Doesn't matter here, I asked for clarification, it didn't happen. But
regardless, she can tell us what she meant. I think one case is a clear
gimmie, one is a toss up, one is not, but the latter 2 I don't think came
true. In the end it's either going to be the clear gimmie, or, one of the
cases that did not come true.

Is there not a gimme rule that says a gimme, if not changed, can neither
right nor wrong and therefore is zero?

well, thanks Marty, but I'm willing to give this one up. I didn't post
my predictions in nearly enough time to question it ~ and that one
wasn't nearly as specific as it should have been.... I'll try to
refrain from running that scam again (at least not without some minor
modifications)... ;)

Just because we take your $900 and inspect your picks does not make your picks
legal. It DOES make you $900 poorer and violated, er inspected. All
participants will be treated equally - except in the following rare and
extraordinary circumstances:

1. You are leading
2. You aren't leading but should be
3. Mom always liked you more
4. You need to be "taken down a peg"
5. Your sponsor secretly asks us to because you're not getting any attention by
racing, so a little controversy will get them some air time.
6. We feel like it
7. We make a mistake (in this case please refer to #6 as our official position).
8. Any other time we feel like it will be in the best interest of RPG and its
entertainment value.

Wait - you're loosing me here. How can a prediction that didn't
come true be a gimme? And assuming that #3 above is the prediction
in question, it certainly doesn't sound like a gimme, even if you
expand "rookie" to mean "drivers who have not competed an entire
season". Even if you count Edwards and Hamilton & a couple of
the part-timers there's only 6 or 7 rookies, so predicting that
out of that small number 2 will cause a wreck _and_ end up 2+ laps
down because of it sounds like a reasonably unlikely event.

(for the record, I agree that Leffler is not a rookie)

Ok then, if the prediction was 2 or more people in the broad category> of rookie not limited to roty contenders will be a lap down, again,> that's a sure thing.

The prediction was 2+ laps down ("more than one"), due to an
accident (i.e. not due to being lapped just because they're slow)
which they caused (i.e. not because they ran into someone else's
wreck that happened in front of them).

That's a compound enough set of circumstances that I don't think
it's a sure thing, even at Darlington.

John
