Johnson & Stewart

Draft 24 April 2005 21:10:02
Just want was Johnson talking about when he claims that Stewart was giving
him a hard time? I've read the post race article but I can't find where in
the past 3-4 weeks where Johnson's claims are real. Can someone tell me if
I'm missing anything here?

Well, I can give you some quotes from from a story posted at
nascar.com.

Jimmie's quotes:

"The last three or four weeks I've raced with him, when I get to him
he's mad that I'm going by.

"He started doing the same thing again (even though) I haven't been
around him all race," Johnson said. "Shoots me the bird running down
the backstretch and runs me all over the place and then goes in the
turn and stands on the brakes to mess with me.

"I ran out of room and got into the back of him. I don't know why he
gets so irate whenever I'm around him (but) I end up being the whipping
post every time I get to him, it seems like."

To be fair and balanced, here's Stewart's side of it from the same
story:

"I don't know what he was doing," Stewart said of Johnson. "He was
running guys up and down the racetrack. He about ran Junior into the
wall and I about ran into Junior because of that.

"And then he finally put me backwards."

NOBODY likes gettin' passed! It might be a former Cup champion, like Smoke,
or a new guy. I was watching an In-Car camera shot of Kasey Kane at Daytona
come up on Green in the King's number 43 Dodge, and when Kasey ducked in to
get the overlap, Green moved down to block, and Kasey said on the radio,
"Well the 43's got the same problem as last year". And they are both in
Dodges! And Kasey was clearly faster, and going to pass eventually. I
reasoned that Green had to make the block to keep his job, as Richard Petty
can hire anyone to lap the track slowly. And ALL car owners watch that stuff
on video.

It's true that no one enjoys being passed, but there's a time to fight
and a time to let a guy go.

Times to fight for your position:

1. When the leader is about to put you one lap down. If you can hold
him off, you might catch a caution. The leader should expect some
resistance from guys he's trying to knock off the lead lap.

2. When yielding to a faster car might cost you positions. Even if
you're already a lap or more down, you sure wouldn't want to move up
out of the groove at Bristol and get freight-trained by 20 other
cars--including others who are also on the same lap you're on.

3. When the checkers are about to come out. Obviously that's the time
to protect whatever position you have.

Times to let a guy go:

1. Except in the situations noted above, it's better to let faster cars
go on by. In this case, you actually help yourself by letting them go
since deviating from your line to block and/or running side by side
fighting for position slows you down.

If I were an owner, I'd want a driver who was aware of the situation
and makes the right decision for the circumstance.

Who knows what he was talking about. He was just trying to place the
blame on someone else. Even if Tony has raced JJ hard thats racin and
if JJ can't handle a guy racing him hard then he needs to get out of
NASCAR now.
