OK, gonna try and guess the top 5 this week:

1) Johnson keeps the point lead. Actually, the prediction
is Johnson gets a T5 (which gaurantees he keeps the point
lead).

2) Biffle stays on the hot streak and wins. Been a while
since we've had 2 wins in a row (Johnson last October, I think).

3) Wallace top 5.

4) Newman top 5. Both of these guys run this track pretty
good, both are due for a little luck, and Wallace at least
has been pretty stout in the last few races.

5) Earnhardt top 5. Nothing in his recent performance
suggests this, but for some reason he's always run well at
this track so maybe this week he'll break out of the early
season slump.

Bonus: Wallace bumps Newman out of the lead on the last lap
and wins the race. Post race is marked by a notable shortage
of tempers.

Actually those are two *very* different predictions. Biffle trails by
135 points. The max you can score is 190 if you win the race and lead
the most laps. If Biffle scores the max, JJ needs only 55 poings to
tie and 56 to stay ahead.

35th and leading no laps scores 58, so JJ only needs to finish 35th or
better to guarantee keeping the point lead. If Biffle doesn't score
the max, he could finish even lower and still keep the lead.

We called "JJ keeps the point lead" a gimmie a couple weeks ago when
the margin between first and second was even smaller. So, the Gimmie
Police will accept a prediction that JJ pulls a top 5, but not that he
keeps the point lead.

Indeed, I did in fact see that the gimme police spoke up a
couple of weeks ago, which is why I said "actually the
prediction is".

The Win: Greg Biffle. I said I'm gonna stick with him till he
either wins or we get to a road course, so he's my pick this
week. As I recall, he led most of the race last year, so I
might be lucky :-)

1: Kasey Kahne gets a T5.

2: Matt Kenseth gets a T5. (my alternate pick for the win)

3: Dale Earnhardt Jr gets a T5.

4: Jeff Burton gets a T5.

One of these days I'll get the top 5 right :-)

5: Michael Waltrip drops out of the T35 in owner points.

Basically that says I expect Mayfield to finish about 4
places ahead of Waltrip, since the #40 & #4 cars are about
80 points back from there, and that's a bit much to make
up in one race.

Bonus: someone gets excited leaving the pits, and crosses
the grass into turn 1, causing an accident.

Kurt Busch bonus: "the car'd been loose for the last 10
laps, and I just couldn't catch it before I hit him".

 The Win: Denny Hamlin. Another right respectable qualifying run;
one of these weeks that'll pay off in a win.

1 - Scott Riggs backs up a strong qualifying run with a T10 finish.
Scott has tended to qualify a lot better than he runs, but I'm
thinking maybe this week the team can put it all together.

2 - Jeff Burton leaves with the points lead (in other words, I'm
guessing Burton to finish ahead of Gordon).

3 - Dave Blaney is top Toyota and T20. Just the first part of
that would be too close to a gimme, so I'll take my chances on
a compound prediction.

4 - Casey Mears, the consistant backmarker of the Hendrick team,
will finish ahead of Kyle Busch.

5 - Kenseth and Biffle both finish ahead of McMurray. I don't
think that good qualifying run will translate into speed in the
race.

bonus - the race has to be red-flagged briefly when a rattlesnake
is found in the pits.

If it would have been the Subway 510 I think he almost might have.

Yeah, he was just about that close. Certainly he had the best car
out there all night, better than both Gordon & Stewart.

I'm glad the Fox crew showed us Hamlin's error, too; I'm of the
opinion that NASCAR mostly gets the calls right on pit road speed,
but it's still nice to get confirmation (I'm reminded, today, of
the incident a year or two ago when Stewart got hit with a penalty
at Sonoma - he swore up down & sideways he was going 4200 rpm
which was below the speed they'd set on the pace lap, and it wasn't
until after the race that he realized he'd been in second gear,
while the pace lap was run in first.)

Well, rough day in quals for the MWR guys. Hard luck for Reutimann
blowing an engine, based on practice speeds he should have had
enough to make the field if he'd been able to run.

The Win: I had a feeling last week that Tony Stewart had a win
in him before the end of the year - it wasn't last week, so I'm
going with Stewart to win this week.

1 - kind of an odd collection of Toyota guys this week (Benson,
Villeneuve); I'll go with Blaney to be top Toyota, but not
better than 15th.

2 - on a track he's actually seen before, Sam Hornish managed
to get in the race. He'll run much worse than the qualified,
and finish worse than 30th.

3 - Earnhardt suffered the misfortune of an early qualifying
draw and consequent slow speed. He makes up for that and
finishes T10.

4 - Both Tony Raines and Johnny Sauter are loosing their rides
next year, both qual'd in the top 10. Neither finishes better
than 15th.

5 - 2 out of 5 Roush cars in the T12.

OK, Megan reminded us that we need to get the picks in...

The Win: Greg Biffle. I picked the wrong Ford last week, so I'm
going to try again. Biffle's been decent on this track, and even
tho he qualified mid-pack, I think he'll move to the front.

1) best Chevy: Kevin Harvick. Another mid-pack qualifier I think
will move forward.

2) best Toyota: Rowdy Busch. It's his kind of track, I think.

3) best Dodge: bunch of 'em up front in qualifying. I'll pick
Kasey Kahne to prevail over his teammate Sadler.

4) best Rookie: no Almirola again. And this is a track that all
the pointy car guys are familiar with, since it's always had an
Indycar event. So I'm going to pick Regan Smith, on the theory
that the shorter tracks favor the guys who know how to muscle a
stock car around.

5) story of the race: Jeff Gordon has a bad day for the second
week running and finishes worse than 20th.

unscored bonus: there's at least one accident in the turn 1 pits
which requires the affected car(s) to return to the pits for
repairs.

Well, lets see how many folks misspell Phoenix in the next
few days...

The Win: Carl Edwards needs it if he's going to catch Johnson.
That won't happen. This has been a good track for Earnhardt in
the past, and it's a short enough race that Tony Jr should be
able to keep the car properly adjusted. Earnhardt wins the
race.

Best Ford: Jamie McMurray is racing for a job. But Carl Edwards
is the better driver, and finishes best Ford.

Best Dodge: AJ Allmendinger, in an upset, brings the #10 car
home first amoung Dodges.

Best Toyota: after being fast and unlucky for several weeks,
David Reutimann prevails over the JGR cars. (his boss finishes
3 or more laps down, altho that's not part of the scored RPG).

Best Rookie: looks like we have Ambrose, Hornish, Smith, and
Speed this week. Ambrose qualified best and finishes best.

Story: DEI by all rumors is all but done, imminently to merge
with Chip Gannasi Racing With Felix Sabates (the result of
which will undoubtably be called something like "Chip Ganassi
with Felix Sabates present Dale Earnhardt Incorporated Racing")
But the DEI cars have been running fairly well, and this week
Menard, Martin, and Truex all finish T15.
