You almost want to say if they can't get lap 1 completed the race hasn't started
and you can work on your car under red or pull out the back-up without penalty.
That was pretty lousy.

I do wonder how the impound and huge change in conditions from qualifying to
race might have played into that.

Then why qualify at night and race during the day when you can't
adjust on the car in between? That does seem a tad foolish.

I wonder how much NA$CAR saved the teams by not practicing under race
conditions on Saturday vs all the tornup racecars on Sunday?
IMHO, the impound needs to be modified, now!

Like Phil said, I don't think the impound had anything to do with
it. Practice on Sat isn't going to stop Hamilton cutting a tire
on the parade lap and suddenly slowing when the green drops.

And don't they get just as much practice time as before?

But the race starts at the *beginning* of the first lap, not the end of
it. So if you take green, but don't complete the first lap, you've
still started the race.

I could see someone trying to argue that if they get wrecked or
something happens before they get to the start-finish line on the
initial green, then the race hasn't started for them. However, I think
logic and reasoning dictate that the race is officially under way for
everyone the instant the pole sitter takes the green.

That did happen in one race, didn't it? I seem to remember some
folks being allowed to grab their backup cars after a pace lap
accident.

Was that when MM veered into the infield when his power
steering locked up?

I think you may be thinking of the all star race at Lowe's
a few years ago...

They took the green, and the skies opened up, a bnunch of
cars got wiped out going into the first turn.
They were allowed to work on/go to backup cars.
Jeff Gordon won the race.. in a backup car.

Nope - it was at a Winston. NASCAR started the race with rain on the track
and a handful of cars (all I remember are Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton) went
sliding off into the wall at turn 1. Since it was the Winston and the rules
for that bear no resemblance to anything else in Cup racing, NASCAR decided
to let the affected teams haul out backup cars and try again. Seems to me
there was a one hour time limit on what NASCAR allowed the teams, but that
time limit might have been in part a real limit, and in part related to rain
delay/track drying - can't really remember.

The only time I can remember them allowing that was when rain started in
turn 4 just as they received the green flag and the big one happened before
turn 1. Can't remember the year or the track, but I do remember them
allowing everyone to bring out their backup cars.

It's simple: It was The Winston, and in The Winston that year, the rules
stated that caution laps did not count. Hence, on a first lap caution, no
laps had been run, so the race was ruled not to have started, and the teams
were allowed to bring out their backup cars.

In any other race, caution laps do count, so that won't work.

Wasn't it a Winston All-Star Race? I believe it was a non-points race
when they pulled out the backup cars.
