Nascar is out of line on this one. The inspector lost his job. However,
the car was illegal so....

Yup, that was the feeling I ended up with - why ask for approval when> you know it's illegal? Still, Nascar didn't play fair, I thought.

If the story is true, I definately side with Sauter's team... when you're
dealing with tricky rules, and you think you may have something but aren't
sure if it's legal or not, what else can you do but ask the rulemaker to
check it out? And they paid for the privledge, no less. Assuming no
post-inspection tampering, it really does sound like Sauter's team was
trying to do things by the book.

If NASCAR wants too keep fairness but allow teams creativity, as they claim,
this is definately NOT the way to go about it.

Know it's illegal? I didn't see that anywhere in what has been stated or
published Nancy. The rules at NASCAR these days are not as clear cut as you
might think. There's room for interpretation and unlike days gone by,
interpretation gets crews into big trouble now. Not because it's against
the rules, but because NASCAR does not want crews getting creative and
coming up with something that is not the vanilla product. The Sauter deal
has all the appearance of a situation where the team thought the carb would
be legal by some definition of the NASCAR rules, but they could not be sure
just how NASCAR was going to apply the rules this week, so they asked rather
than risk it. How much more can you ask a team to do? Does anyone really
think they would take a "blatently" illegal carb to NASCAR and ask if it's
alright to use that carb? Especially in this day and age where NASCAR fines
teams for "infractions" before the car even gets through tech? In my
opinion, NASCAR sanctioned that carb by virtue of its own Official accepting
and sealing the carb. If they want to play the inspect and impound game
then they have to step up to the responsibility for their own actions.

Reckon that's why a NASCAR official was fired?
