Why is Biffle so hot?

Romy Beeck 20 April 2005 20:31:24
I'm not a Biffle fan or a ford fan but he looks like the guy to beat this
year.Anyone with a back up car and starts from the back and wins the race
must be a very good driver. He has been good every race this year.Maybe its
the year for ford.He makes it look so easy to pass anyone this year.I just
wonder why he looks like a super star this year. What did they do to that
car?

That particular backup car is not just another car. That car won the
California race earlier this year.

And Biffle isn't just starting to show up, he's a former NCTS and NBS champ,
so the dude can drive too.

Biffle and Kurt Busch are the best DRIVERS on race day. Kasey Kahne is
good too. IMHO

In the post race press conference in the media center at TMS, Biffle said
they found something in their shock package and have been running the same
shocks just about every week.

And, correct me if I am mistaken, but wasn't that the backup car
also at Cali?

Could've been. Did he start a backup car at Cali? If so, then you are
correct sir.

Biffle started 5th at Cali, told everyone he'd be leading by lap 5 but
actually got to the lead by lap 4. He was in his primary car.

so the questions are: did they or is he just trying to throw nascar and the
other 42 cars off on a wild goose chase by saying "shocks" and now everyone is
trying to figure out the shock secret? or did they but the other 42 and nascar
all know he'd never talk about what they really did so now, even though he told
them, they're looking everywhere BUT the shocks.

Good question Romy. The Roush cars clearly have something going for them.
Whatever Jack has figured out, he's got a heads up on the rest of the field
for now. As for Biffle, he's certainly in the spotlight right now. If no
one else figures out what Jack figured out, he could well be this year's
Champion for Roush. Back up cars aren't what they used to be though. These
days the back up car is pretty well set up with the same package as the
primary car and it's really not that big a deal to win a race in a back up
car anymore.

Good questions.
There is way too much money involved to tell anyone what they have found.
It's only a matter of time before everyone else finds out.
Trying to make that time as long as possible is Roush's goal.
Remember Harry Gant's crew bending the rear axle to give the right rear tire
some camber ?
A little thing like that and he won 3-4 races in a row because of it.

That'd be my guess, that they're trying to throw people off.
Rememeber when nobody could catch Newman, and he was claiming it was
because he had a smaller carb or something? Turned out to be something
to do with the water pump if I remember correctly, there was an article
in Circle Track mag. about it after they finally figured it out.

Don't know about "catching" Ryan Newman, but he won some races on fuel
mileage due to his smaller carb setup. I don't think it made him any faster,
just made him get enough fuel mileage to make it to the ends of several
races when his closest competitors could not make it. We also had rock
solid, almost non-wearing tires back then too, and they're a thing of the
past now, thankfully.

Just curious though, as to how a water pump can make a car faster? They
don't rob that much HP do they? And everyone has to have one...so the
differences would have to be minimal.

I can't remember what the story was about on the pumps. Maybe they have
them archived on line and you could find it. You are correct, a pump
doesn't take up tons of power, but if you are creating less drag on the
motor, you will create more power and probably marginally better mileage
as well.

The problem with that piece of deception is that the gain would be
extrordinarily minimal. Any benefit from such a small gain would require a
huge number of laps before it would translate to any on track gain. These
cars never run green flag laps long enough for that sort of miniscule gain
to even hit the radar scope. There is so much talk these days about getting
1/1000 of a second gain out of something and it kind of becomes part of the
mystique of the sport to talk about that as if it were really meainingful.
It would be meaningful if the cars ran enough laps, but they don't, so all
of this mystical magical stuff is just a boatload of crap.

The original design Dodge pump was very inefficient at higher rpm.
The revised design took 5+ horsepower less to drive, as I recall.
5hp isn't a lot, but everything else being equal it's worth having
(better control of the water flow also let the engine builder be
a little more agressive elsewhere, without the risk of getting a
hot spot behind an exhaust valve or some such inconvenience).
