Sick of Lucky Dog

Krusty 17 April 2005 17:39:51
I never liked it, but thought I'd give the LD a chance before making
up my mind. If you can't race back to the lead lap then you don't
deserve to be there. Either bring back racing to the flag or dump the
LD. I might be ok with letting the leader choose if someone gets a
lucky dog.

what I don't like about the lucky dog is that it only gives laps back
to the cars one lap down ~ even if they are so far away from the leader
that there is no way that they would have been able to get that lap
back under the old "racing back to the caution" conditions. If they
gave it to the lapped car that was closest to the leader ~ regardless
of how many laps down they were, then I think the rule would be more
fair (and more closely resemble the concept it is intended to replace).

BTW I'm not a fan of racing back to the flag, but if it could be done
efficiently, I'd be ok with it when the cause of the caution doesn't
involve a wreck or stopped car between the leader and the flag or very
dangerous track conditions, and maybe at short tracks not at all.
When they can't race back either no lucky dog or some altered form
like the one I suggested.

Even better - freeze the field when the yellow comes out; and if someone
wants to be on the lead lap he should have driven there while the field was
under green.

Exactly right! That being said NASCAR loves the LD because it keeps more
drivers on the lead lap and more importantly the potential of more drivers
getting back on the lead lap ie more excitment.
