The networks are the backup, backup, backup plan

Lately I cringe when Jeff Burton opens his mouth...

From http://jayski.com : Burton talks about TV Responsibility: Jeff Burton
told "Sirius Speedway" (MRN/Sirius Satellite Radio) Wednesday that while
TV networks bear some share of responsibility for televising incidents like
the one that caused NASCAR to fine driver Shane Hmiel last week, the
ultimate responsibility still lies with the drivers themselves. "This stuff
happens on the spot, without you knowing you're on TV," he said. I have
an in-car camera every week, and if some driver rolls by and gives me the
finger on national TV, is that his fault? Is he going to get penalized? We
have to hold ourselves to a high standard, and I support NASCAR in its
efforts to clean things up. But where does it stop? The networks are the
backup, backup, backup plan. They need to help keep things off TV that
they don't want their viewers to see. But it's our responsibility as drivers
not to put them in that position. We'd like them to help us out, but it's
still our responsibility."

That sounds about right to me. Ya can't have a bunch of sissy boys riding
around in circles out there, holding back all of their emotion because they
might show something on TV. He's right - I'm sure there were a hundred more
gestures at Bristol that day. It's not Shane's fault that his was the only
one shown on TV. :)

My position is I don't think the networks should protect or cover-up for
the drivers. The drivers know if they do something wrong it will likely be
caught on camera and replayed for the viewers. Getting busted on TV
is part of the game. That's why we watch. We want to see what is
actually going on, not what the network predigests and spoon feeds us.
According to Jeff Burton's world, what we see on TV would not be much
like what actually happens at the track. I understand bleeping out the
cussing but the networks cannot filter out everything that might be
deemed offensive or improper. I think that would take it to the point were
what we're watching is not real. If a driver acts like a punkass, he's going
to be exposed on TV as a punkass. I like it that way.

You'd have to ask the people he STEALS them from...
