Lead Changes at Cookie Cutter Vs Non Cookie Cutter Tracks

Mango 31 March 2005 09:45:56
 X-No-Archive: Yes

OK, so just out of curiosity I looked at the number of lead changes at the
"Cookie-Cutter" vs their similar but different "Non-Cookie-Cutter" track
rivals as described throughout the 30 Yr Fan Thread above.

People say they don't like the "Cookie-Cutters" because it is just follow
the leader and no passing. Well the numbers below, from Nascar.com prove
that the racing is far better at the "Cookie-Cutters"

Fall California 29 (Cookie-Cutter)
Summer Michigan 25 (Cookie-Cutter)
Kansas 24 (Cookie-Cutter)
Texas 24 (Non-Cookie-Cutter)
Spring California 23 (Cookie-Cutter)
Chicago 20 (Cookie-Cutter)
Vegas 18 (Cookie-Cutter)
Fall Lowes 18 (Non-Cookie-Cutter)
Spring Lowes 16 (Non-Cookie-Cutter)
Spring Atlanta 16 (Non-Cookie-Cutter)
Fall Atlanta 16 (Non-Cookie-Cutter)
Spring Michigan 16 (Cookie-Cutter)

Based on that, it would appear to me that the best racing happens at 4
"Cookie-Cutters" and 1 "Non-Cookie-Cutter":

California Speedway (Avg 26 Lead Changes)
Kansas & Texas (Avg 24 Lead Changes)
Michigan (Avg 20.5 Lead Changes)
Chicago (Avg 20 Lead Changes)

While the worst racing happens at 1 "Cookie-Cutter" and 2
"Non-Cookie-Cutters" With the much praised Atlanta being the worst of them
all:
Vegas (Avg 18 Lead Changes)
Lowes (Avg 17 Lead Changes)
Atlanta (Avg 16 Lead Changes)

Not to pick nits, but lead changes can be a bit decieving due to "lead> cahnges" that may happen during the cycle of pit stops. IMHO, good> racing has less to do with the number of lead changes, and more to do> with close, side by side racing. people in the stands also is a good> indication of the quality of racing. I wouldn't call that "nit-picking" at all, Dan. You raise an excellent point.
While Mango mentions lead changes, he does not make a single mention
(at least that I saw) of how many of those lead changes are passes on the
track. As you said, anybody can lead a lap by staying out while the rest
of the field pits. At Vegas this year, it seemed like the only time anyone
caught JJ was out of the pits. Same thing with Biffle when he was leading
early. Take out the pit stops, one of those two would have won the race
anyways.

Do you have the numbers on margin of victory?

Excellent link and thanks for posting:

"The only group I saw that had any "interest" problems were the little E
fans. Not all of them mind you, but I did see a number of them bail out once
Jr. started having his problems. Typical Californians though.
In Martinsville, an Earnhardt in trouble just means that fan has more free
time to boo Jeff Gordon. In California, it means a chance to beat traffic.
Watch any Dodger baseball broadcast to witness this phenomenon in action, by
the 6th inning folks are heading to the SUV corral."
My SoCal impressions aren't changed at all...sorry Bud...you're alright...
