Is google.com down? Did your local library burn to the ground? Were you
kicked out of school?

OK. It was Francis Scott Key, and god only knows when it was written or
first sung. For written I am gonna guess 1776 (give or take), and first
sing I am gonna guess 1900 (early baseball).

The music comes from an old British drinking song. Francis Scott Key wrote
the lyrics while onboard an English ship in the Baltimore harbor during the
Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812 about what he saw during the British
attack on Fort McHenry. As far as who put the words to the music and why it
was sung, I forget and I am too lazy to Google.

And if your name *is* Tonto or Running Water, you also got here the same
way. Everyone in America is an immigrant - there are no "native Americans".

The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key, and American
citizen who was on board a British ship that was anchored in Baltimore
harbor during a bombardment of Baltimore by the British during the War of
1812. British were trying to destroy Fort McHenry, which guarded the
entrance to the harbor.

I may not remember this part correctly but, as I recall, the Brits -- who
had captured Washington, DC -- were holding one or more Americans as
prisoners on board one of their warships. Key, an attorney, negotiated the
release of the prisoner(s) but they were required to stay on board the ship
for a day or two afterward.

Key's first stanza reflects his worry that the fort would not withstand the
all-night bombardment and would surrender by dawn. He was so happy when
the dawn came and the American flag was still flying that he wrote a poem.
Again, as I recall, the poem was titled something like "The Defense of Fort
McHenry" and was published in several newspapers.

The tune is an old British drinking song. I have no idea who first put
Key's poem to music.

And I did all this without Google. Of course, I'm 60 years old and learned
all this from a Classic comic book, before the days of dumbass video games
and even dumber TV.

FS Key did.

Francis Scott Key first published his impressions of the Fort McHenry victory as
a broadside poem, with a note that it should be sung to the popular British
melody "To Anacreon in Heaven." Soon after, Thomas Carr's Baltimore music store
published the words and music together under the title "The Star-Spangled
Banner." The song gained steadily in popularity in the years before the Civil
War. By 1861 it shared with "Yankee Doodle" and "Hail Columbia" the distinction
of being played on most patriotic occasions. Nonetheless Congress did not make
the song the national anthem until 1931.

The melody to which Francis Scott Key intended his poem to be sung was the
popular English tune known as "To Anacreon in Heaven." Written about 1775 by
John Stafford Smith, the tune was originally the "constitutional song" of the
Anacreontic Society, a gentlemen's music club in London named after the
6th-century B.C.E. Greek poet Anacreon. It became extremely popular in America,
where it was used to accompany a number of verses, including the patriotic song
called "Adams and Liberty," before 1814. Key himself used the tune for his 1805
poem "When the Warrior Returns from the Battle Afar."

Well, the Indians got here tens of thousands of years ago. But let's get
back to you, Mr. Hurst. Your family no doubt came here from Europe 3 or 4
generations ago - why are you so upset that folks are coming from Mexico
and Central America during our (your) generation? Do you think Americans
want to do the work that they (Mexicans and Central Americans) do here in
USA? The reason 40% of Black American males in USA between the ages of 20 -
30 are either in prison or on parole; is because they feel it is easier to
sell drugs at a school than to take a minimum wage job
(www.naawp.com/crime_stats.htm). If you remove Mexicans and Guatemalans
from jobs in USA and send them home; half of the fast food joints close,
America never makes another carpet, rug or towel; and half of the
construction in The South comes to a complete halt and the builders go
bankrupt.

It was first written as the "Star Spangled Banner" on Sept. 13, 1814 in
Chesapeake Bay "The Star-Spangled Banner" was officially made the national
anthem by Congress in 1931.

I am having a hard time agreeing with Carl Sagan's assertion that we are
closer to yeast than to hominids though. That was stated in "Billions".

You got the writer right, but he wrote it during the War of 1812.
