Midrace Standings - #8 ahead of #18, #21?

Colin Campbell 14 March 2005 23:25:48
Why were the #8 and #25 shown ahead of Labonte and Rudd before those two
cars returned to the track later in the race?

I was sure I saw Bobby Labonte and Ricky Rudd drive away from the wreck
site and onto pit road. Presumably, they made another lap, or were at
least "ahead" of Earnhardt and Vickers.

Maybe there's some scoring technicality I don't understand....

well, I dunno for sure, but my guess would be that they froze the field
while Labonte and Rudd were still behind the wreck ~ so they would be
scored that way.

We were talking about this a bit yesterday... that would explain why
the 8 was scored ahead of 18 and 21, but why was he scored in front of
Vickers??

I was wondering that too...

Does it have to do with which car rolls farther?

I think that it used to... I think it's now done solely on the position
when the caution flag comes out.... maybe they determined that by the
time they threw the flag Jr had pushed his way past Vickers on the
track.

Scoring is done by how many laps you complete. If two drivers are tied
in how many laps they completed, then they are ranked by the order in
which they completed that last lap.

If you drive into the garage before you cross the S/F line, you are
scored based upon your position the last time you completed a lap.

The last scoring loop they pass determines where they score...

Apparently, Vickers hadn't overtaken Jr at the previous loop...

Was a heated topic on Wide Open tonight...

I don't think it's done that way anymore Barry.... I think it's based
soley on their position at the time of the caution as determined by the
scoring loops on the track... the last complete lap isn't a factor
anymore.

At present all scoring of those cars involved in an accident goes back
to the last scored lap so when they passed the start finish line before
the wreck, the 8 was in front of the 18,21, and 25. The 18 and the 21
drove away and went to the garage for repairs but in doing so did not
pass the start finish line again until they came back out thus the 8
remained ahead of them until they crossed the s/f line.
