Dress code?

Guest 4 March 2005 21:44:09
"At Thursday's news conference introducing some of the Mexican drivers
recruited to race, the drivers were flanked by six edecanes (hostesses)
wearing tight-fitting sponsor-logo bodysuits. That's in sharp contrast
to NASCAR's buttoned-down officials, who do not allow women to wear
open-toed shoes or sleeveless tops or bare their midriffs in the garage
area." (From USA Today's Sports page.)

Huh? I could swear I've seen flip-flops, bare midriffs and tank tops
in the garage area.

They're not supposed to be allowed in the garage, usually stipulated as
"safety" concerns, especially in regards to open-toed shoes. I know
everytime I've ever been fortunate enough to have a "hot pass" or even a
"pit tour" as a part of a hospitality package, there is a longish dress code
and "things not to do" list one has to literally sign off on in order to be
allowed in the pits/garage. At tracks where RVs park inside and therefore
race fans are literally inside the gate to watch the race, now they come in
all sorts of clothing typically. But "in the garage" there is certainly a
formal dress code, whether or not it has been enforced up until now is
another thing. Look at Delana Harvick, she even thinks any wives or
girlfriends that sit on pit boxes during a race should be in firesuits, and
has pushed for that regulation for anyone in the "pit" during a race. Hasn't
gone anywhere as of yet, but she herself is in a firesuit on any race day
she is on the pit box while Kevin is racing.

Remember there is a difference between pits and garage. There isn't an
enforced dress code on most pit roads-the tracks have more control
there. But to get into a NASCAR garage for any of the Big 3 Series,
you must have your shoulders covered, closed toed shoes, and pants or
skirt that is at least mid-calf. This is enforced and if someone gets
by security-not uncommon- any official can and will ask them to leave.

I had an opportunity to spend the weekend in the pits at Martinsville-'93.

Dress Code for guys at that time, was a collared shirt, blue or black jeans,
closed-toed shoes. I wore steel toed black sneakers, because I didn't know
what to encounter!

Not to change the subject, but then again I digress, who do you think the
brains behind Kevin Harvick's race team is? I wouldn't exactly call Harvick
an illiterate idiot by any means, but what's the word on his wife? Is
Delana running the show for Kevin? Is Delana Harvick the next Theresa
Earnhardt?

Depends on how long ago that was, and whether it was during a
race "activity" (i.e. the race, qualifying, practice) or not.
Some few years ago (probably about the time Mike Helton became
prominent in running NASCAR) they did institute a dress code,
which is mostly common sense/safety type things.

Note that NASCAR has never permitted "brolly girls/race queens"
after the fashion of F1 or MotoGP, which is what the "edecanes"
are. Of course, Mexican advertisers, being more used to the
global racing series, would expect to use them.

Yeah but Jeff Gordon never wears that in the car.

My wife got hassled by NHIS security when trying to go on pit road in a
sleeveless shirt - not a tank top, just sleeveless. I knew about the long
pants and shoe requirements, was not aware of the sleeve requirement - then
again I don't have the guns to go sleeveless in public.

There is a photo from Rockingham a few years ago floating around of a
drivers wife or girlfriend jumping over flames to escape a pit fire (I
can't remember if she was wearing heels or not). Delana is no idiot!

From what I've seen, Delana is involved in her husbands
career...nothing more. I'm not a Harvick fan, but I'm a fan of any wife
standing behind her man...or vice versa for that matter.

It was probably Ward's wife since, IIRC, he was behind Kenseth's pit at
the fire in 2000 Fall race...I was sitting right across from that fire
in row section 25, row 11 seat 9 (had to check my ticket stubs, hehe)

Unless of course it was a different pit fire:)
