Hard to say yet, but the minorities are working hard in the lower levels of
racing and more than just one token example will be in the race fields of
the future, I have no doubt. Outside of Wendell Scott, they simply have a
lot of catching up to do. You don't just "show up" and become good at
NASCAR, you first have to weed your way through all the local and lower
brackets of racing first, and those ranks of drivers, in my experience, are
far more diverse than Nextel Cup (as far as drivers, the Nextel garage is
already awash of various races of people). Give it time, it'll happen. We'll
have more Hispanic participation too, one day. It is also going to take more
than "diversity" programs to get folks of color interested, it's going to
take parents willing to buy their kid a go-kart, or quarter midget, or a
mini-cup car or just take them to some races, to spark and then fuel the
racing passion.

What we may have first, will likely be an Annika Sorenstam of NASCAR though,
with the likes of Erin Crocker and Sarah Fisher in stock cars/development
deals that should lead them to Nextel Cup in the next couple of years.

But if I had to guess as to Tiger's eventual NASCAR counterpart? A really
wild guess? James "Bubba" Stewart. I know he is a motorcycle racer now, but
he and his dad are stock car fans, and have been approached about driving a
car in the recent past. Word is, they liked the idea, but only after he
moved into the 250cc class and won some there, fulfilling that dream first.
Then, it was said, they would think about a move to car racing and possibly
NASCAR if the "timing and situation were right". Sounds like they have a
solid outlook going on. But staying on point about Tiger, who was it that
helped fuel his passion for golf, and pushed him to be the success that he
is? His parents. A racing incarnation of Tiger will require a similar
dedication from their parents too, so it ain't *all* NASCAR's
fault...besides, golf is a single sport, autoracing requires a large team
effort. There's no gaurantee that there ever will be a "Tiger Woods" of
NASCAR, be they white or black, or yellow, or tan, or even green for that
matter. But I bet there will be "succesful" oval track car racers of color,
in my lifetime no less.
