Waltrip - Another DNF

Guest 1 March 2005 02:50:03
DEI tells this driver he needs to perform OR he will lose his job. How
do they expect him to perform if they can't give him an engine that
will run the course of the race.

I am starting to wonder if they (DEI) are helping him not perform.

Very disappointed,
Amy.

Michaels getting too much attention and junior doesn't like it. He never
has. He wants all the attention for him self and has been trying to get rid
of Michael since Sr. died.

The ONLY reason he's still in that car is because he's such a good pitch man
for his sponsors. Napa loves that guy. I'm surprised they didn't keep
Mikey in the Napa car and switched crews with Truex.

Mikey will get less attention in the second half of the season when TNT and
NBC take over....no more DW pining for his bro

I tend to disagree with that one. Michael gets the same amount of
attention on both networks. I don't think that DW plugs his brother in
excess. The only time they talk about him is if he is in the top 10 or
blowing up. Both of which he has been doing this year :)

There is a reason why this guy had no ride before SR decided to give
him another shot. He just isn't that good...it's simple.

It's good that you see those things as valuable in Mike and they give you a
reason to root for him. Personally, I find his sponsor whoring to be way
over the line - even with the understanding that they all have to do some of
that stuff. Michael Waltrip just takes that to new highs.
You notice Jeff Gordon never mentions TYVEK as a sponsor, and yet he wears> the sponsorship decal prominently on his firesuit.

So? Do you really believe that every driver - or any driver for that
matter, mentions every sponsor that is on their firesuit or their car? It's
really kind of wierd that it matters whether a driver mentions his sponsors
or not, instead of how good a driver he is. This is automobile racing after
all, not Madison Avenue recital day. It's the way things have evolved, but
I don't believe that's in any way a good thing.

I root for Dale Jarrett. Seems Mikey beats Jarrett more often than not.
That doesn't keep me from finding Mikey a VERY likeable person (not to
mention handsome)

I cheer for a whole passel of drivers when bad fortune strikes, such as
flat tires and out of gas, bad pit timing & then a caution etc .. never
anything like wrecks. I hate wrecks.---- But Mikey isn't one of those.
But I never cheer for him either. I probably would if he changed owners.

The man who writers your pay check isn't important.. Then Nextel shouldn't
have it's name on the race! See how much you enjoy racing then.
I think Mikey is as good or better than most. If they gave him Jr's car,
he'd probably be the best out there. He never gets to the top based on how
many people he shoves out of his way. And he doesn't abuse his pit crew
either.>

He switched crews, yes. That's because Jr had a very dysfunctional crew
relationship.

Jr's crew relationship is based on aversives *expletives deleted*
Mikey , even after he explodiated continued to feed his crew helpful
information while it was fresh in his mind, to further his team
advancement.

This is far more positive feedback and helpful that *You S** of a B******E
gave me a piece of trash car*

Mikey drove the wheels off his car yesterday. He went down fighting.
Obviously things need to change at DEI. But even though they switched
teams, my bet is Jr STILL gets the best of the parts, cars and setups while
Mikey remains R&D driver.

A lot of cars blew up yesterday. I'm not blaming it on Mikey. JR Might have
blown up too, if he had gone fast enough and spent more time on the track
instead of the pits.

Well - you took what I said and you stretched it to an extreme statement
that I never made. I never said the folks who write the checks are not
important. I only commented on the way that sponsoring whoring is done
today by some drivers. You'll note that while they all mention their
sponsors, some take that much further than others. I'm a Gordon fan but he
is one who takes it too far as well. When they cannot answer a simple
question or make a simple statement without getting 7 sponsor's names in,
then it's gone too far. Again - watch, not all drivers feel the need to do
this. BTW - I have enjoyed racing for decades - even before the current
rage of over emphasizing sponsors. Even through it.

I think Mikey is as good or better than most. If they gave him Jr's car,> he'd probably be the best out there. He never gets to the top based on how> many people he shoves out of his way. And he doesn't abuse his pit crew> either.

That's good. That's what fans are supposed to do - believe in a driver.
But... if he never gets to the top by pushing people out of the way (which I
pretty much agree with), then why would he need Jr.'s car or anyone else's
car? He's won races, he's run up front. If it's by clean racing that he
gets there, then by definition, he has *the* car. Giving Michael any
different car is not going to help him anymore than the 15 car is, IMHO.
It's a powerful car that has demonstrated itself over time now.

I heard a Mark Martin interview where Martin said the press had permission to
beat him if he ever got into Cup ownership.

After what happened to DW (and Ricky Rudd and Bill Elliott), I can't see why
Mikey would want to be an owner-driver. Too many headaches and too much
opportunity for financial disaster.

I said 'if' he was in a NC car.
Not he 'would' be.
I don't see him going to another NC team.
That was probably the motivation for him to start his Busch deal.

How can you tell? Are the Blue ones all new cars?

All of the cars that were ready to go for this season,
were all redone right after the team switch.

Not all drivers have solid sponsorships behind their teams, either. I
don't ever hear about Junior or JG worrying about whether their
sponsors are going to re-up or not, do you? Being wrapped up in paying
tribute to sponsors may be distasteful to the fans, but that's the way
the racing world works. Those sponsors demand - and should get - every
bit of exposure they can for their $15-20 million a year.

I fully agree that the switch was done to benefit Junior.
Jr figured Mikey had a better team than him, that worked well together,
wanted the switch. Bad things loom for JR this year.> Jr's problem is his mouth. NOT his car, NOT his team, and NOT his driving.> Jr has a hot temper and potty mouth. Jr probably would have won last year> if he didn't keep penalizing himself with his temper.

I agree that Junior has probably alienated his crew with his comments. I
don't know which came first, the chicken or the egg though. Not sure if the
Eury's were taking advantage of a good thing, or if they were responding to
Junior's tirades. Guess we won't really know since we're not on the inside.
It will be interesting to see what plays out with the team switch though.
I'm not really expecting a lot, since by and large I don't believe team
switches have really accomplished much over the years. Kurt Bush is one who
benefited from that tactic but I think that was more that he benefits from
Jimmy than from the idea of a switch. Martin certainly has not benefited
from getting Kurt's team. Likewise with RCR when they made the big
whooplala over switching teams. I just don't believe the whole idea of
switching teams is all that great.

It's not "Eury's" anymore, just "Eury." Tony Sr. got bumped upstairs and doesn't
have an active role with any single team. Tony Jr. is Mikey's crew chief.

Yup, Michael Waltrip Racing will hire him immediately after he leaves DEI.
He's contended all along that he was building his Busch team up to be his
"life after DEI" project. Whether or not he takes it to Cup or not, his own
racing team is his retirement plan.
