Y'all may have heard that the 'expert panel' at
Inside Nextel Cup seen Mondays on Speed Channel
had their 1 hour time slot expanded to 1 1/2 hours.

It has been confirmed that Speed's 'Pit Bull'
1/2 hour show in '04 has been cancelled.

Not TV but Internet--Matt McLaughlin's contributions to Racing One
was eliminated before 2/1/05. Jayski posted that Matt was not renewed
by the new owners of Racing One-ABC Promotions-owned by ISC and the
France family.

Anyone else see a pattern here?

Suck-up Mikey & his fellow 'experts' Schrader, Benson, Kenny Wallace
get an additional half hour added, BUT 'tell it like it is' Internet
& newspaper journalists like Mike Mulhern, David Poole, Ben Blake,
Matt McLaughlin, and even Marty Smith have their wider audiences
cut back by 'owners'.

So much for a 'benevolent' dictatorship, eh?

I am a bit surprised that Speed Channel, owned by FOX, would give up
their 'fair & balanced' so easily. Maybe FOX figured they could
end up like ESPN, huh?

As for me, i have taken Racing One off my 'Favorites List' and will
continue to read Mulhern, Poole, Blake, Smith, & somewhere MMcL,
via ESPN-Sponsored JAYSKI. Oh, Oh! Next?

It's really quite simple. Fox pays NASCAR big $$ for tv rights.
Nextel > pays Fox big money for ad space. Anything that harms the > Fox-NASCAR-Nextel-$$ interconnectivity is eliminated. Anything that > helps is enhanced.>
If you want to see people 'tell it like it is' on television, look > elsewhere other than a Fox or Fox-owned outlet.

Exactly.
It's all about the Benjamins.

Not that it matters anyway....it's sports after all.

Some people tend to forget that.

Pit Bull was cancelled because nobody watched it. I heard from
informed sources that the ratings were awful. No ratings equals no
advertising dollars. No ad dollars equals cancellation.

I'm no expert at making sense of the Nielsen TV ratings system. Could
you, or anyone, look at last season's numbers and tell me why Pit Bull
got a higher 'Average Audience' than Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain
and other popular SC shows? WT got a 59 for the year and PB got a 75.

http://nascar.alanjones.us/speed-channel-2004-ratings.xls

Tell me if you have trouble getting the file. I'll email it if needed.

Thanks.

I'd say the time slot Sometimes on early Sat eve had more to do
with their demise. I'd also say if they had one hour instead of
a half hour they wouldn't have been so CNN Crossfire ish.

What are the other shows like Pit Bull?

Maybe not a TV show, but probably another website.

The problem with major sports is this:
If a network doesn't have a stake in a sport, they're not going to do a
show on it. That'd be like running commercials for other networks. If a
network does have a stake in it, they'll do a show that is overall
positive in nature. Don't want to damage their investment. ABC/ESPN
might do something, but they want the next contract, so they're not going
to do much to alienate themselves from NASCAR any further.

Oops, meant to type McLaughlin, not Mulhern.

I'm pretty sure McLaughlin was never on the Pit Bull show.

Just to clarify, the McLaughlin deal is a whole different story from the
Pit Bull thing while Mulhern was a regular on the SC show. I think the
worst thing about the show is perhaps Mulhern and David Poole fought
too much.

Yeah, I know.

Cru was talking about how McLaughlin lost his job when somebody connected
with the France's bought the Racing One website (I don't know the details,
I've really never visited that site)

Btw, for the record and those who may not know, NASCAR has a deep,
'very strong', hatred for the various websites within the NASCAR
community and racing world. They are an evil plague and not actual
media. As with the Pit Bull show, NASCAR views any criticism as an
assault meant to destroy or take over.

Someone tell SpeedTV that it's time for some new blood for this show. Half
the cast isn't even in the Cup series anymore.

Someone get them Carl Edwards' phone number.

NA$CAR also has deep pockets & a long reach, but i don't think they
can do much towards critic Monte Dutton-many newspapers, Jayski, Mulhern,
and even Marty Smif at Turner's website Ndotcom.
Well i suppose they could pull their hot passes one by one.

I imagine NASCAR exerts a lot of influence on nascar.com since Turner Sports
is only licensing the trademark. NASCAR could easily decide to shop the lease
out and not renew with TS.

I would not put it past them to do such a thing. I have no doubt it has been
done in the past.

I agree. I don't think it is. I figure it's how NASCAR has done things
from the beginning. It's what they're used to getting away with and
I think they will have to learn the hard way. The criticism NASCAR
receives is mostly because of their strong-arm tactics.

7-0 Iggles!
