Another article on Sharyn McCrumb's new book 'ST. DALE'...

These pilgrims walk in Dale's tire tracks
PAT MACENULTY

The Charlotte Observer -- I was a relative newcomer to Charlotte when
one morning I found myself unable to take my usual route past Calvary
Church on Rea Road. A funeral was going on -- Dale Earnhardt's -- and
traffic was backed up clear to Interstate 485. That was when I got my
first inkling of the region's obsession with the eponymous saint of
Sharyn McCrumb's latest novel.

McCrumb has devised an unusual and ambitious approach to the world of
NASCAR. Since she is a renowned southern writer, McCrumb's journey into
the world of stock car racing seems a natural detour from her "ballad"
novels, honoring the people and the land of Appalachia.

The premise of "St. Dale" is that, following his death, the legendary
driver has become a secular saint who makes appearances when necessary
and performs minor miracles. Similar to the fans who regularly spot
Elvis, McCrumb's characters occasionally have Dale encounters. As
McCrumb says in an author's note: "I wanted to do a book on the
canonization of a secular figure -- a Canterbury Tales with a modern
saint..."...

CHOICE BOOKS: McCrumb puts pilgrims on the path to enlightenment
Rob Neufeld

Asheville Citizen-Times -- A winged No. 3 on a red background -
probably many of you catch the reference, displayed on the cover of
Sharyn McCrumb's new novel. The title, "St. Dale," provides the second
big clue.

McCrumb, premiere popularizer of Civil War history ("Ghost Riders"),
pre-Civil War crime ("The Ballad of Frankie Silver"), environmentalism
("The Rosewood Casket") and other mountain topics, has pushed the
boundaries of her fiction further. In "St. Dale," she has turned a
southern NASCAR tour into a pilgrimage. She's cast the late Dale
Earnhardt as a secular saint...

Maybe its because I'm not from Appalachia (but I'm only 1 hour away),
or maybe I'm just ignorant, but I've never heard of this woman. Don't
take this the wrong way but: Who is she, and what's the big deal
about her book in particular?

Just wondering.

I have heard of the name but I haven't read anything from her. I think
her situation is interesting because it shows how DE's death brought
a huge number of fans into NASCAR. It created entirely new fans and
turned casual fans into avid fans. Also, I think 'ST. DALE' might be
good reading.

A few years back she won 'best first novel' from the Mystery Writers
of America (the 'Edgars') for her book 'Bimbos From The Death Sun'.
But, unfortunately, the followup sucked, and she has had an up-and-down
career ever since. 'Bimbos' is about a murder at a SciFi convention and
is quite funny. A good mystery even for those who aren't into mysteries,
and the title refers to something within the story (before you guys get
all hot and bothered).

Bimbos is definitely better than the sequel "Zombies from the Gene Pool" but
both are still a lot of fun. She's done NASCAR now? I'll have to go look.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the book might be worth getting.
