| Odometer - 260 E Peter Ryan 06:38:28 |
| | Greetings
I have a 1989 260E which has just completed 260,000 kilometres.
However, a few weeks ago, the odometer and trip meter stopped operating.
My mechanic says the odometer will have to be taken out and sent away for repair - which in Mercedes speak sounds expensive!
Does anyone have any advice here? Is there a simple fix?
Thanks in advance
Peter

| W124 Grille Removal Geoff Miller 01:31:54 |
| |
I hit a deer with my '91 300D 2.5 the other day, necessitating replacement of the grille. I have the new part on hand, but I can't figure out how to get the old grille off. (I Googled this newsgroup's archives for tips before posting, but the only advice I found was somewhat less than helpful: "Go slow -- it's easy."
There are only two screws that I can see, located at the upper corners of the grille. But after removing them, the grille won't come off. Obviously there are other screws...but where? I felt around behind the top of the grille and didn't notice any.
(By the way, buymbparts.com rocks. I had the part precisely 24 hours after placing my order. Thanks for mentioning them in your .sig, Richard.)

| Does anybody like roundabouts? Greek_philosophizer 21:54:54 |
| | In my area roundabouts are rare but when I venture to areas that have them I find them very difficult - especially when they are used for fairly fast traffic.
Does anybody actually like them or are they just used because they have always been used?

Man, 30, injured as van overturns
Aug 8 2006
A 30-YEAR-OLD Coventry man was taken to hospital after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned on a Warwickshire road.
The accident, which involved a white Mercedes Sprinter van, happened near a roundabout in Oversley Green, Alcester, on Friday afternoon.
The injured man was a passenger in the van, which was travelling from Evesham toward Alcester, when the driver decided to change exit lane on the roundabout and lost control of the vehicle.
The passenger was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch and later transferred to Selly Oak in Birmingham for surgery.
Police are appealing for information and would like to hear from anyone who saw the accident.

| Multiple reality check needed - water pump and ac compressor Steve Harder-Kucera 12:13:35 |
| | (1987 300E)
I had a not entirely unexpected water pump failure today. The needle touched the red line for perhaps 30 seconds before I could get safely off the road.
I was a mile from the house. It cooled off and I was able to get home without it overheating again. Started the removal of the water pump this evening. Since there was a fair amount of crud on that part of the engine I removed the power steering pump instead of just moving it out of the way. I want to get a good clean up going before I put everything back together.
Of course now that those two items are out of the way, I'm getting really good access to the AC compressor, which also need replacing.
So here is the three point reality check request:
1: What are the chances that I escape unscathed from the very short red line incident? Should I just go ahead and set aside the money for the head gasket right now, or do I have a realistic prayer.
2: Since the power steering pump is out, what should I do maintenance wise before putting it back together? I figure since it's out already I'd like to clean it up as well as possible before putting it back.
3: This is the big one. Should I even consider getting the AC compressor out since I'm in this far? Safety considerations would be my first concern, secondary concern is that I may be opening a can of worms that I can't get closed. On the other hand it seems I could save a bundle on labor if I can pull it off.
Thanks.

| Auto trans shifter stick goes clanka clanka Sw 10:13:32 |
| | On a very long trip my 88 190 E, after changing the gears on my auto stick shift while at a stop sign started to sound as if it is hitting the drive shaft or something. The sound and the feel of the clanka, clanka sound like something under there is hitting something intermitently. If I pull the stick to the side or down or even up a bit it will stop. And if I just start moving it stops. Before I climb under there and discover it can't be fixed by a shade tree mechanic I thought I would tap the expertise of you guys. Any ideas what it is?? thanks

| diesel vs regular fuel Dutch-Diver 03:16:31 |
| | Hello,
I am thinking about buying a used mercedes c-type combi. Probably a '97 maybe '98.
If i buy a diesel it will run forever i guess, but.....if i buy one on regular fuel with about 125,000-150,000 KM's clocked..... How far will it take me? Fuel-engines used to be 'worn out' at about 200.000, is this stil the case?
I normally drive about 15.000km a year.
Any tips, please let me know.
Thanks

| Marathon drive David J 03:05:29 |
| | Not planned as such, but I made a long non-stop road trip recently in my CLX. When I reached home I found that I had driven 410 miles in about 7 hours. The MB comfort had made it an easy task.
Later I realised that it must be the longest continuous drive I have ever made. No fuel stops, no comfort stops. I had some sandwiches and some drinking water onboard to keep me going.
However, I'm sure that others can beat this.

| clogged diesel injector pump Knucklebuster 22:43:38 |
| | My "friend" mixed some inadequately filtered veggie oil with diesel in the tank of his 1982 300D turbo. The car ran fine in the drive for 20 minutes, but started chugging & died once he got on the freeway. Upon inspection, his filters were clogged & it appears the injector pump spits from only one port.
Is there any chance of de-gunking such an IP, or is it likely replacement will be neccessary?
Any suggestions for IP replacement articles?
Thanks,
Chumly

| | Hi, I know a couple who have been housing a 1968 200d in an old barn the last few decades; vehicle has no rust and runs perfectly. They are asking $3k for the initial buying price, would I be able to turn much of a profit via ebay motors for such a car? I am NOT an automotive minded person, so any information you could send my way would be much appreciated; thanks.

| I LOVE roundabouts!!!! McBrue 07:29:15 |
| | Of course over here in the colonies we don't have very many. And here in SC - well - there are a couple on Hilton Head Island. But boy have they been screwed up!!!!!! The city fathers of Hilton Head have poured more cement separators into them than exist as curbs on all the rest of the island. They regulate which lane you can go into depending on which exit you want to take. And these are only for 4 way intesections!!!! So if you want a good laugh, come on down to Hilton Head Island. And do bring some green stuff to throw around. And do leave your radar detector up and running because they do speed trap on the island. But it is getting SO crowded that I am about to give up and not go there any more.

some tires have better than 90% tread, and all are *easily* roadworthy". help get these out'a my garage in gainesville north central florida. I'll also SWAP these, in full or in part, just see my 'wants list' at the same site, page 1 bottom. tread depth info, closeups of each wheel/tire, etc -all- well organized with 50 or so good clear 800 x 600 shots, *including* interior closeups of ALL spokes, and the info on them, so you can detrmine rim widths and offsets/suitability for yourself.
price negotiable, "not high" . open to -all- offers. I don't have a 'tire machine', but they're nearby, at local shops. I might ship, but prefer not. but I already DO havw some excellent rim-sized doubleweight cardboard boxes, so ;-/
replies probably best from my site, through regular e-mail. home and cell numbers on request. also have complete set S320 lug bolts/still trying to 'relocate' the set of S500 bolts. thanks

| Does anyone have a parts list for a European w126 sec? Alan Mudd 20:46:44 |
| | I need a part number, or more preferably a series of part numbers.
I'm trying to source the (very rare) chrome cappings for the front and rear bumpers of my 1990 sec (UK car).
Does anyone happen to have the part numbers for the six main pieces?
I've found the following :- A126 885 34 74 Does this fit a 1990 sec or is it for the saloon.....?
and is there anywhere I can get a parts catalogue for my car? - Time I bought one I think.
Appreciate any help.

| diesel secret Marshall Dudley 19:39:21 |
| | A couple of weeks ago my son got the diesel secret, and we gave it a try. To make sure we had no problems with the oil, we decided to use new oil instead of used oil. BIT MISTAKE! No one warned us that you have to use used oil. Anyway, after mixing it up, it pumped fine for about 10 seconds, the slowly dropped down in flow until all we could get was a drip through the filter. We removed the water block filter and it begun flowing again, but in about 20 seconds it did the same thing with the 5 micro filter. An email to Diesel Secret was no use, although we told them the oil was brand new, they responded back that the restaurant had this or that problem and to let the oil settle and so forth, when of course there was no restaurant involved at all and the oil had nothing to settle out.
Anyway, after spending a couple of weeks trying to get the stuff to pump through the filters, we finally threw all the new oil out, and got some used oil from a restaurant, replaced the filters, and processed it. As far as we can tell, it is working fine with used oil.
So be forwarned, using new oil will not work, you have to use used oil.
Marshall
