Help-98 C230 Pass outside mirror

 A few days ago, I very lightly bumped into the passenger side outside
mirror while walking by it in the garage. Evidently the hook or
whatever that holds the mirror to some sort of spring has broken off.
The piece dropped on the floor but now the mirror will just flop
around. No other damage.

Does the entire mirror assembly have to be replaced or can just the
mounting plate be replaced? I've thought about removing the mirror
and seeing if someone can weld broken part back to the plate. There
are four screws. Can the mirror be removed by taking these screws
out, or will this require removal of the interior door panel?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
