bad safety inspection karma

Rusted 3 May 2005 21:05:32
Does this only happen to me?
I have spend the past few nights with the jeep "studying" for the state
safety and emissions test. The jeep is running great now, and I have taken
care of a few odd things (like mud flaps, and the mirror that came off a
while back). Last year the hazard light switch was flakey, but because of a
fast tongue it passed. So last night I tear into the steering column and
replace the turn signal / hazard switch, and walla all is well. Drove it
around last night, and everything worked fine.

Until this morning ON THE WAY to the inspection house I notice that my left
turn signal indicator light on the dash is not working. What could be
wrong. For some reason my front signal does not work now, the dash
indicator does not work, but the rear signal does work. The entire right
side works fine. What is wrong this time??? Is there anything common with
the dash indicator and front signal, that is not common with the rear light?

This is a 83 CJ7 Thanks for any ideas

My first guess, I replaced the front bulb already. No change.

Then it's back into your column to reconnect that wire, or fix
where it got pinched to ground.

 You're not the only one.

Three years ago I pulled into the extortion station. There was already a car
inside being tested. They told me to back up against the fence. I backed up
and pushed the brake pedal. The pedal went to the floor as a brake line let
go.

Still does not account for why the rear works, and not the front or the
dash. The column only knows "blinker on" - " blinker off" and that is
working (in the rear). I have the old switch I can plug in to test that
theory.

Every switch has at least six wires running from it, it must in
order to be able to switch off the rear stop light to use as a turn
signal.

The wire in common is green with a white stripe.

the green with white stripe is common between the front and the dash, and
not common to the rear signal correct?

That sounds worse than mine, I will take a bad blinker over brake loss any

I plugged my old switch into the harness, and things worked. So I replaced
the "new" switch again, and so far so good. We will try for that all
illusive safety and emissions again in the morning. Mike, thanks for the
help with the color coded wires, it did help try to troubleshoot a bad
switch.

 No.
Me and a friend of mine went to the test (he '78 CJ7, me '81 CJ7) last
friday. Mine passed, his failed because of oil in the right rear drumbrake.
He fixed it and did a retest yesterday, where they tested the brakes and
did a quick runaround cause everything was fine friday. He passed.
Pulling out of the test station he discovered that NONE of the
turnsignals where working.

Thom.

The brakes had stopped the Jeep before the pedal hit the floor, so it really
wasn't bad at all. Just one of those "Oh Sh*&" moments.

The extortion station was 1/4 mile from my house, so I just drove home in
first gear.

Went to the shop today, only to find the familiar faces I know not working
there any longer. Two older gentlemen were working, one was not limber
enough to get his leg up into my jeep. These two guys tag teamed my safety
inspection and it took them 15-20 minutes. They checked everything they
could think of. They even noticed that my rear license plate was a little
loose. Then for the visual part of the emissions test they printed a vacuum
diagram to compare it with my engine, and even tugged on hoses to verify
that they were properly attached. When he came in and told me that it
passed I about fainted. After that it passed the sniffer in the tail pipe
emissions test as well. This is better than a birthday!
