XJ Brakes

Carl Saiyed 30 March 2005 23:17:23
The brakes on my 89 Pioneer are getting pretty weak, even though when I
bought it about 4000 miles ago it had new pads/shoes all the way around. The
"Brake" light comes on when I push the brakes, usually if I push hard on the
pedal, but not always if I am realllly easy on the pedal. I checked the
fluid and it was dirty, so I used a shop vac to suck the fluid out. Filled,
pumped brakes with the master cap off, fluid was dirty again. Repeated
process 2-3 times and its now pretty clean, but same problem.

I'm hoping for a bad (balooning/split/cut) brake line or water/air in the
lines that needs bleeding. But I'm thinking it's probably the master
cylinder.

Other ideas are appreciated!

Carl

 Hi Carl,
The light coming on indicates the fluid is going through the
proportioning valve to the front or rear axle more than the other. Four
thousand miles of wear could show up a self adjuster is not working on
the rear brake drums, or a bad wheel bearing on the front. Of course,
your diagnosis of a bad master cylinder, the difference in the primary
and secondary would throw it too.

 Have you checked the pads?

You could just be describing worn out brakes. A new set of pads and
shoes might be all you need.

The black coming back fast after pumping isn't a good sign though. That
can imply the seals inside the master are toast.

What happens if you just hold down on the pedal for a while? If it
creeps down and the fluid doesn't go down, the master is dead.

It sounds like you have induced mass quantities of air into a closed system.
I suggest you visit a brake shop and have the system flushed properly.
Please let us know when you leave the house so we can stay home.

I don't think you did a good thing there, Carl.

I can't imagine any brake work that would go smoothly if the brake fluid was
sucked out instead of pushed through. I am not sure, but I suspect you have
set up a faliure that would also result if you had replaced the master
cylinder but failed to perform a procedure called Bench Bleeding. Failure to
bench bleed will definitely result in having air in the system, and air will
lead to a mushy brake pedal and weak brakes.

I just have to say it, please do not use your shop vac to clean out
any thing that has to do with gas or any flammable material.

Sounds like someone that has never rebuilt an engine, nor has a
shop or garage to do it in, and of course doesn't own a wet and dry
vacuum.
