Headlights

I was just wondering if theres anything special about replacing the
headlights on my TJ. It looks pretty basic, but I just wanted to make sure.
Do I have to do a lot of adjusting to make them point correctly?

BTW if you were wondering why i am replacing them, I smashed one using a
chain to pull someone out of the mud. Yeah I have been told not to use a
chain for that very reason that it might come back when it breaks. Well im
very lucky that nothing else at all got broken except the headlight. So, i
went over to O'Reillys and got myself some Silver Stars.

Thanks guys!

Naw, nothing special involved, except that the screws are those little
Torx bastards. No adjusting needed as long as you only remove the
screws used to secure the outer bezel ring.

just make sure you get the ones holding the lights in (should be
obvious, just give a look). The ones that do the adjusting are
different.

My husband bought me a 1981 corvette for my birthday. The headlights were
working fine. They would come up and down very good. Now the lights are up
and won't go back down. We have checked all the fuses, and they are all
good. We checked for vacuum leaks, and no luck. Can someone help
me,please? Wilma

Did anyone fiddle with the switch under the steering wheel that holds them
open? I haven't used them in quite some time but there is a way to keep the
headlight doors open.

Novus-3 plastic scratch remover. Then follow with Novus-2.

 Hello there,

Iv got a really annoying problem with my headlights on my polo (C,
1990, G reg). For some reason the OS headlight will not come on when
the headlights are turned on normally. However, on Main beam it works
fine. Iv invested in a multi-meter but have little experiance of the
methodology to find the cause of the problem.

Also every so often, the OS headlight will come on normally, but will
soon go off again even when the car is not moving.

Any help/ideas would be much appriciated.

Cheers,
Gav

At the risk of stating the obvious but have you tried changing the bulb?

Check the connector on the back of the light cluster; something's loose.

Hi, I would check your fuse and fuse connections, they are on the passanger
side bulkhead area in the engine bay.

I agree the problem could easily be a fuse not making good contact - check those
first. There are separate fuses for each dipped beam, S7 and S8 according to
Haynes - if not, you're back to looking for poor connectors. I think it'll be
the thick plain yellow wire for right-hand dipped beam in a RHD version as VW
wiring looms are substantially mirror image for LHD and RHD.

If that seems fine, I've had trouble with a similar Polo headlight problem which
was traced to a burnt connector on the main fusebox - the box is under the
bonnet, the connector plugs in from the inside of the car behind the glovebox.

These high current connectors aren't as good as they should be in use.

I suggest you turn the dipped beams on, and wiggle the various connectors as you
trace back through the system looking for a connector that turns the o/s one off
(or on!) when it's wiggled. The earth lead is common for main beam so it won't
be that side.

Using a multimeter, it's probably best to set it to measure voltage (DC 12 to 20
Volt range eg) and look for 12V at various connectors along the headlight wiring
with the lights on (black lead clipped to bare metal or bolt eg on the car body)
when the fault exists.

Take care fiddling with wires under the dash when the battery is connected -
most are insulated, but you don't want to cause a short-circuit while under
there.

I've found the Polo fusebox of this era can be a bit dicey with fuses
not contacting properly, especially if the cover is missing and water
gets in.
