Camshaft sensor issue

	So, I'm out enjoying the fantastic Sunday afternoon here in Maryland and my 97 Wrangler sputters and dies. The check engine light comes on and I can't get it started. Finally, I disconnect the battery (I was getting desperate!) and I was able to get it to start up and it ran fine the rest of the way home. When I got home and checked the codes, I have a 54 which indicates a problem with the camshaft sensor. My jeep has had some electrical problems in the past so my assumption is that this error is not really a sensor problem, but in fact some kind of a bad ground issue. Thoughts?

The Camshaft sensor is located in the distributor. You have to remove the distributor to replace the sensor Assuming you have the I6 (you didn't say) then this gives you the steps for removing/replacing the distributor. Doing the camshaft position sensor just requires taking the distributor further apart. IF there is oil in there you may be better off just replacing the unit as the new one comes with a new sensor. http://members.cox.net/wilsond/distributor/ -- DougW
