Tony George starts team for Ed Carpenter

Scottscottscott 7 February 2005 23:38:06
"This was probably the very last thing by which Tony George could hold
onto in respects to his original vision. He had already rid his league
of American short trackers, adopted road courses, allowed engine
leasing, harbored super teams, became a haven for foreign roadrace
trained drivers, ruined the I500, made love with the CART owners he
supposedly despised, and now, has finally succombed to being a
series/team owner.

"But, hey, who knows, maybe this wasn't the number one flaw of CART
like we were led to believe in the first place."

An IRL racing team comprised of TG, Larry "Embezzlement" Curry and Ed

This isn't really new. In the early days, IMS owned and entered cars
in the 500.

You're absolutely right. In the last few years, Tony's money has paid for more
than a few entrants.

Did Carl borrow money from someone named Tony?

I can't imagine Carl borrowing any money from Tony, but I can certainly imagine
an outright bribe. All the other receiving teams got charity.

At that time Mari Hulman George wanted to field a car for husband,
Elmer George, but Tony Hulman wouldn't hear of it. According to the
late David Cassidy, Mr. Hulman felt like it was way out of line to have
a "house car."

Seriously, I always wondered why Elmer and Mari didn't have their own
car so he could run.

Had to have been Mr. Hulman's aversion to house cars.

When Carl Fisher ran the Speedway, he regularly entered house cars.
But his style was very different from Hulman's. Fisher even entered
the first event at the Speedway himself.

Rationalization? No. I'm just a traditionalist.

We should never forget our (or anyone else's) roots. The Speedway
became an institution in those early years. Lessons learned back then
are applicable today.
The comment from King Tony was precious. "There was some concern from>the other owners". Ya THINKKKKK???????? God, to have been a fly on>the wall in Penske's, Ganassi's, etc. office. LOL

Well, considering how many cars those guys enter, they'd be less than
thrilled about any new teams.
