97' civic rpm issue

Siddharth Shah 19 April 2005 05:21:50
 Hey,
When i turn the engine on, my car stays on 1000 rpm for about 5 mins rather
than the normal 700 rpm...the car still runs fine, but i was still wondering
if anything was wrong with that.

Thx,
Sid

No, the car is made so when you turn the engine on it stays at higher rpm
(i.e. 1000) so that it can warm up faster for better functioning of engine
so that you can go on your way driving. Once the car gets to normal
temperatures (170-180F degrees) then it calms down to its warmed up rpm
which is about 500-700rpm.

In other words, it's normal; nothing to worry about.

Idling the car for 5 minuet is a little excessive. In the morning, I'd idle
the car for about 2 minuets in the winter and a maximum of 1 minuet in the
summer.

If the car has a fast idle, even after being driven for 5 minutes AND it's
warm outside, the first thing I'd do is get the thermostat replaced.
