Honda Civic Dx special edition vs Civic Dx?

 Is the engine in the Honda Civic Dx special edition any different than
the engine in the Dx? I just had my special ed.'s engine changed, and
the new (used) one seems to sound more harsh, almost like a small
diesel engine. Is that normal?
