What a great race. Obviously the Bridgestones take a while to perform at
their best and MS (and RB for that matter before his off) did not have the
ultimate one lap pace the car is capable of in Saturday's practice. But
that red car is now seriously quick when the tyres are nice and hot. Also
MS showed his class today. But FA was brilliant in keeping him behind too.
What an enjoyable race.!

Yes, I think that the other teams have much to worry about. MS in his
drive was quite noticeably quicker. Loved to have seen Kimi in the mix
at the end. Would really have been a race; however I agree it was the
best race in years. Even JV was respectable.

That Ferrari was about 1.5secs faster per lap than anybody. Where the heck
did all that pace come from? Seriously if it wasn't for the qualifying
error, MS would've walked it (Kimi being the unknown factor). He was very
heavy on fuel too.

Well, I would guess about 0.5 from the car and 1.0 from the tyres, but
basically from three weeks solid testing since the last race <g>. MS
made a big point of congratulating the test team and Bridgestone.

Enormously impressive performance and everybody else now has to make a
similar leap forward. Very noticeable that Williams are looking like
sluggards again and Toyota have gone backwards now that McLaren and
BAR are starting to find the performance in their cars.

McL has its big new package lined up for Barcelona. I have a feeling
this could end up being a Ferrari v.McLaren year, with Renault hanging
on and picking up points to stay in the mix.

On the other hand, it might just be that a different chassis/tyre
combination has the edge every weekend, in which case everything is up
in the air.

Nice to see JV on the pace. Perhaps he should walk this week before
things turn sour again.

Enormously impressed with Alonso in the closing laps. I haven't seen
such intelligent defending for a very long time. Reminded me of Gilles
in a similar situation. Can't say better than that.

Well he was about 1.5s quicker from about lap 24 to 41. On laps 24-27 he had
just been "released" from behind a train of slower cars AND he was light on
fuel - he pitted at the end of 27.

From 29 to 41 he had a clear track ahead of him and a specific target to aim
for (Button). During those laps neither Button nor Alonso (the only drivers
ahead of MS) had any great need to put in faster laps. They were both secure
in first & second places until MS closed in on Button. Even then Button had
no great need to keep ahead since he knew he would lose his place when he
pitted on lap 48.

Once Michael had taken the lead he celebrated with the fastest lap of the
race - 1'21.858s. However, to keep that in perspective, it would have only
been good enough for 18th in Qualifying-1 - only the Jordans & Minardis
were slower than that.

This is not the only time that I have suspected that Ferrari has a device in
their pit area somewhere that is able to warp time :-)­. As I recall, MS was
apparently languishing somewhere in about 11th place, with the CBS
announcers (i.e., Derek Daley) commenting "he just doesn't have the speed
today". It seemed almost impossible that it looked like everyone ahead of
him pitted, he moved up by virtue of their stops, then a couple of laps
later he pits without losing his position! I know that it wasn't exactly
like that, but I have seen Ferrari do this type of thing more than once, and
it makes me want to run the clock back and see just how they managed to do
it.

The Ferrari boys DO have a secret device that can warp time on
a race course. It's called "Michael Schumacher." :-)­

Two things still bug me about that Ferrari. One, if it is so fast, then my
could it only managed 3rd in the first qualifying? Secondly, why didn't RB
do as well as MS on the entire weekend?

Looks like Ferrari will be missing out on poles, but will start with a
heavier car and pulling ahead after the first pit stop. 2002 all over again?
