Wuirz to drive this weekend

Paul Harman 19 April 2005 18:19:03

I understand that Wurz will be taking Montoya's place this weekend.

I thought that wurz didn't drive in Bahrain because he was too tall for the
car (why is he a test driver at all then...?) - presumably I misunderstood
what he said in his ITV interview - or they've built a bigger car for him?

Officially it is, because he's to tall, that's what I heard in the Austrian
TV, seems to be that they do some modifications..

They had to redesign some of the interior configuration so he could fit
comfortably in the new car, yes. From what I gathered at Bahrain, they'd
made most of the modifications there, but by then De La Rosa was already
in the race. Previously Wurz had been testing using last year's car, or
a modified version of it at least, presumably doing tyre and reliability
work.

It's a relatively straightforward story, Paul.

This year's car is build around the dimensions of Kimi and Montoya.
Alex - McLaren's long-serving test driver - is a little too tall for
it as origninally set up, but it was always intended that a modified
version of the car would be available for him.... he is, after all,
the team's official, nominated reserve driver. Meanwhile, he has been
busy racking up thousands of miles testing tyres and components using
the older chassis.

When Juan Pablo hurt himself McLaren brought forward work on the
modifications and had a car which Alex could drive in Bahrain, but he
wasn't exactly comfortable. Meanwhile, Wurz himself had told the team
de la Rosa should drive because of his experience with the new car. As
we all know, Pedro went superbly in the race and Alex was
devastatingly quick on the Friday.... despite having to spend a lot of
the lap steering with one hand.

Since then, Alex's chassis has been further modified and he is
completely comfortable with it, leaving McL with a difficult decision
for Imola. Do they allow de la Rosa to build on his success in
Bahrain, or do they honour their long-term commitment to Wurz, who has
been offered hope of a race drive on more than one occasion? They have
decided to take the later course.
