Sorry DC

Ernest 18 March 2005 11:43:59

At the end of last season I suggested that DC does not deserve to be in F1
anymore. He did a splendid job in Australia and I therefore publicly say
"Sorry DC". Hope you gather many point in the Redbull!

I have been a big DC fan since 1994, if it wasnt for DC i may well have
stopped watching F1 a couple of years ago...
I feel McLaren was not the right envoiroment for him plus Dennis and
Hakkinen had a special relationship that he never seemed to recover from
when Raikkonen came along. I'm hoping for a fairly successful season
this year. Regular top 6 finishes would be pretty good :)

You are a good man Ernest.
I have been a big DC fan since 1994,

I am not a 'big' fan of DC, but have long felt is is
a very competent driver, decent team player,
and good corporate spoksman. i.e. good to keep employed.
I feel McLaren was not the right envoiroment for him> plus Dennis and Hakkinen had a special relationship

Yes, I am real unhappy at the way he was treated by Dennis.
He went to McLaren when the team was down. DC got them
their first GP win in several years.
Then bang, he is instructed to give up a GP win to a teammate.
But the car looks great for next year, and bang, he is again instructed
by team manager to give up another win to same teammate to
start out new year. Real rough on motovation to win WDC!
he never seemed to recover from when Raikkonen came along.> I'm hoping for a fairly successful season> this year. Regular top 6 finishes would be pretty good :)

I pretty much agree.

Hakkinen he isn't;

I agree with most of what you said, but I think Hakkinen benefited
greatly from the two wins gifted to him by DC and McLaren, and also MH's
relationship with Dennis was something DC was never to recover from at
McLaren, by the time KR came along the damage was done. and also added to
that KM's talent and DC's apparant dislike for single qualifying. I feel
that he may have a had a very different career if he had the chance to
stay at Williams. Maybe not a WDC but the potential was their imo.

Definitely. I'm a big DC fan, even though I rate him highly, I was
amazed at how focused he became at RBR.

It's kind of amazing that I as a McLaren fan, now am more saddened by
the lack of their results than I am of what DC provides RBR!! Comparing
budgets, and the heritage of last years Jaguar I was prepared to suffer
while DC drove a wreck at the lower part of the field...

Now I just hope that my favourite team will get their act together as
well so I can be happy for them as well. :)

If this is the end of a career, then I hope David and RBR will continue
as they have done this far.

Sorry, but I simply can't agree with that. Berger and Patrese were
blown away by Senna and Mansell. DC was usually fractionally slower
than Mika - the fastest qualifier on the grid - over one lap. He
usually matched him on race pace. He as also the man who started the
McL winning streak - then he moved over for Mika twice and never got
the momentum back within the team. There was never any doubt who was
Ron Dennis's favourite.

We all have our blind spots. I'm afraid you have one about DC.

Nice to see he is now the highest scoring British driver of all time.

I fully agree with that, especailly with who was Ron's favourite.

I read he was the fifth highest scoring driver of all time (behind
Schumacher, Prost, Senna and Piquet I think). The others amassed 17
world titles among them, which does say something about the way DC has
scored his points.

On the other hand I loved his comment about Montoya yesterday (what
happens when fat people try to get fit). Nice to see him with a twinkle
in his eye and not needing to be quite so corporate.

Even after today's point, he's still 5th but he only needs 2 more points
to move into 4th place:

Next target is Senna's 614 points but that is quite a ways unless the
point system changes dramatically or else he wins every race for the
rest of this season[1].

he's a good driver, excellent teamplayer and sympathetic as well...but hold
your horses...negative stats against Hakkinen, Raikkonen and now even
against Klien?

Still doing better than Villeneuve though! Poor Peter Sauber. He really
made a bad decision this time. Probably quite expensive also....

Villeneuve was a very special talent who dug his own F1 grave by going
to BAR. But instead of either working his nuts off to make the team
succeed, he stayed there and slipped down the grid, becoming more and
more embittered and less and less impressive. His return to F1 shows
that what we've got back is the disinterested Villeneuve who will
grumble around in midfield and collect the pay cheque, rather than the
Villeneuve who would put heart and soul into racing.

He's obviously, blatantly, only in it for the money this time round.
(Well, so was Niki Lauda when he came back, but by God Niki was still
"on it").

The Villeneuve of 1997 in this year's Renault would've been a prospect
to salivate over. As it is I'm glad they got rid of him after last
year's outings; he'd be an embarrassment to the team.

I didn't compare Coulthard to Villeneuve. But I agree, that it seems that
Peter Sauber for once did not have that lucky hand, he had before...
Why this Villeneuve bashing all over this NG ? Is this some kind of jealousy
? He he's made himself a good contract, and ?
Compared to Coulthard, who was as well in several seasons in a competitive
car, Villeneuve won the championsship.

It is actually very sad. After winning the championship, nobody doubted his
talent. Now everybody wonders whether it was not just the car in 1997.
Perhaps he thought that after the BAR fiasco he should show his real talent,
but now
the opposite is happening. Very sad.
