Anyone see what happened? The car was trashed, but he seems ok.

Looked like he hurt his other arm this time.
Didn't see the replay but that car was completely destroyed, I'm suprised he walked away.

 Montoya escapes horror smash
McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya, returning to Formula One after missing
two races due to injury, crashed heavily in practice for the Spanish Grand
Prix on Friday. The Colombian clambered from his wrecked car after crashing
at turn nine some 30 seconds from the end of the day's second session.

He appeared to be suffering some pain in his left arm as he climbed
over the tyre wall.

Montoya missed the Bahrain and San Marino Grands Prix after suffering
a hairline fracture of his shoulder while playing tennis at the end of
March.

He was replaced in Bahrain by Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa, the test
driver who topped the times for McLaren in both of Friday's hour-long
sessions at his home circuit.

From Autosport:-

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya walked away from a massive crash in
practice for the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.

The McLaren driver, returning to racing after skipping two Grands Prix
due to a shoulder injury, lost control of his car with less than two
minutes of the second practice session remaining.

Montoya went off the circuit at the final turn, his car hitting the tyre
barriers at high speed.

Although the car was destroyed in the accident, the Colombian managed to
climb out on his own. He appeared to be suffering some pain in his left
arm as he climbed over the tyre wall.

The state the car was left in suggested Montoya could be forced to
change his engine for tomorrow.

Yeah, ok, actually I was making jokes before reading about it and seeing
pictures of the car. Now it's not funny anymore.

I wouldn't be suprised to see him sit out another race especially
seeing as how well PDLR did! He WAS holding his right shoulder as he
walked tward the barrier but when he climbed up and over he definately
seemed to be favoring the left arm as well. He may just be rested to
give more time to heal.

Still supposedly racing according to Mclarens website:

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
"It's nice to be back at the wheel of the MP4-20. However the first time I
have a shunt whilst driving for this team had to happen today and I'm sorry
for the guys who have to repair the damage overnight. I don't know what
happened but I just lost it. I went to see the FIA Medical Delegate
afterwards and he said I was absolutely fine. My shoulder has been coping
well and until the last lap everything had been going according to plan. I'm
excited about the rest of the weekend and hopefully we will put on a good
show."

Yes, if they can't put the original engine into the spare car. It counts as
an engine change.

From Mclarens website:

Team McLaren Mercedes driver Pedro de la Rosa emerged fastest overall from
both of today's practice sessions with times of 1:15.675 and 1:15.062,
providing the team with a good basis for the rest of the weekend. Kimi
Raikkonen ended up fifth in the first session (1:17.851) and fourth in the
second (1:16.586). Juan Pablo Montoya who made his Formula One comeback
finished tenth in both sessions (1:18.402 and 1:17.555). However on his last
flying lap the Colombian went off the track at Turn Nine but was OK. The car
incurred damage to the right hand side (suspension, radiator, bodywork) and
both front and rear wings which will be repaired in time for tomorrow's
sessions.

So looks like the engines is o-k and a quick rebuild?

I'd have preferred he'd have missed this race and let de la Rosa race
instead or Worz.

I'd have liked to have seen Wurz have another race or too.

As a wavering Montoya fan I'm getting tired of his non performance.
He's already blown his chances this season.
I say ditch el gordo and give Pedro the ride. He seems very consistent and very quick.

Ummm... Errr... I don't think I agree that JPM is guilty of "non
performance". It does depend on what you mean by that but last year, he
scored points in 13 out of 18 races. 2 races were non-scoring due to
mechanical problems and 2 were DSQ. Only 1 race was he classified
outside the points, (Bahrain).

Regarding PdlR's consistancy, one cannot really say because, prior to
his race at Bahrain, he hadn't been racing in F1 since 2002. Being quick
in testing and being quick in the race are very often not the same. We
need only look at Gené last year to see that. Pizzonia was more
consistantly in the points - 3 races with points out of 4 and the race
without points was due to gearbox failure.

As to "blowing chances" again, I disagree. Of all the McLaren drivers so
far this year, he has the most points and that is with missing 2 races
although, had KR not had problems at San Marino, KR may possibly have
won and would have jumped way ahead.

MfG

Geoff.

Nah PdR is fast cause he's a friday driver and he doesnt have to save
anything for the race. He proved that he was inconsistant the last time he
raced..

Good points indeed. As far as his non-performance I meant his two week vacation.
Monty should have been capitalizing on Schumi's problematic first few weeks instead of staying home
babysitting. (jk)
Perhaps pedro's performance says more about the MP 420.

I thought that too upon watching the video for the first time. However, I
believe he was simply undoing the chin-strap of his helmet. The camera pans
to the right for a few moments, and when it moves left again, his helmet is
off.
