Common Misconceptions

CatharticF1 25 April 2005 07:33:30

1. The Earth is flat
2. Schumacher was only quick in Bahrain because he was low on fuel
3. The F2005 is hard on tyres
4. The F2005 isn't quick.

Alonso looked like a hunted man, and every track isn't Imola nor will
Schu start so far bak.

"In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its
faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary
for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to
the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely
to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in
Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall
become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of
any other."

...but he is now 26 points behind so it theoretically it could take him 13
races to close that down. It'll be interesting to see which one of them
"blinks" first - and then there will be reliability issues thrown in for
good measure.

Imola is a difficult track to pass on - but then so is Barcelona & so is
Monaco (the next 2) and so a number of others.....

Where on earth do you live? The nineteenth century.

Let me add, as I feel it must also be a common misconception around your
way.

5. It's okay to sleep with your sister

I think one or two other drivers may have something to contribute that will
scupper that theory. Given this weekends performance it would seem likely
that it is Alonso who will find it more of a struggle to stay high in the
points.

They may even let Rubens join in now MS is ahead in the points.

Just to correct a small error here - "MS was doing 21s up until then".
Actually he only did one lap below 1'22s in the whole race - lap 48
(1'21.858s). He hadn't been in the 22s range since he caught up with
Button (last 1'22s lap was lap 41, when he was 1.5s behind JB).

Michael's quick laps (sub 1'23s) didn't start until lap 24, and continued
until lap 41. In that time he only dropped outside 1'23s on three laps
(laps 27 - in lap, 28 - out lap, & 39 - backmarkers?).

Apart from backmarkers (maybe?) he had a fairly clear track throughout those
laps.

24 1.0s behind Wurz (4th)
25 3.5s Button (3rd)
26 1.2s
27 1.1s
28 21.9s
29 20.2s
30 18.6s
31 17.1s
32 15.3s
33 13.6s
34 11.9s
35 9.4s
36 7.5s
37 6.3s
38 5.3s
39 4.6s
40 2.8s
41 1.5s

Ahhh, thanks. I think i may have fallen for a "and now he is doing

Yep, he had a very clean run until he caught Jenson, who did him a
favor and then he had some more clean ones to catch Alonso.

Agreed. I fear barring future incidents as happened in qualifying, Shuey
could win all the remaining races this year. I hope Renault is up to the
task but after so many years of seeing Ferrari dominate, I have little
faith.

Quite. And?
Look, some of us watch Grand Prix racing hoping to see a fight between
the best driver and the best machines. Which is precisely what we had
yesterday. Schuey will win races this year, but hopefully there will be
real fights for the titles.

There is also a question over just how much Alonso was holding back to
preserve an engine that had already had to do Bahrain. Next race,
Schumacher will be running with an old engine, and most of the others
will have new ones.

Add in Kimi's bad luck, and I don't think we have yet seen a true
comparison of the cars.

But there is no doubt that the Ferrari is right up there and Schumi will
win a few races this year.

And also the traction/power of the Renault seemed to prevent MS from getting
anywhere close for the "usual" passing place at the end of the straight.
Maybe MS should have run a bit less wing in order to make passing easier?

Well subsequent to the first pitstops Wurz was certainly no slower than FA
and I beleive KR would have been somewhat faster. This would still put him
an astonishing 1-1.5 secs slower than the Ferrari though. So they would need
a big step to close. He also has a big disadvantage in Q1 next time out.

If Ferrari vapourised we would have a hell of a season with Renault, Bar and
McLaren having the cars of the moment but Williams and Toyota not out of the
game. Unfortunately it only Ferrari who have the technology to vapourise the
opposition apparently.

I vote for a Ferrari one make formula to rid us of some of the more
unsavoury characters currently associated with F1. ;)

Well thank God that the racing actually continues behind the leader then :-)

Let's just pray for TV directors that don't follow the leader for 50% of the
time when they're not doing anything interesting.

Schumacher used the same engine he used in Bahrain, it had only done 13
laps.

Also, at the press conference Alonso seemed to be alluding to using a
tactic of braking more than usual at the apexes in order to prevent
Schumacher getting a run on him out of the corners. Impressive drive
from FA, he didn't make any errors under all that pressure.

Don't worry about it, you aren't all expected to understand everything right

Well out with your best CBS impression then. I think you'll find you're
