ITV's clarification of ad break

Emma 24 April 2005 21:28:21

From Autosport:-

ITV Sport has apologised to it British viewers for taking an advertising
break in the final three laps of today's San Marino Grand Prix but said
the disturbance was unavoidable.

ITV, which covers the Formula One races live to more than three million
viewers in Britain, drew heavy criticism from fans today after they
moved to a three-minute advertising break in the closing laps of a
thrilling race, which saw World Champion Michael Schumacher battling
with race leader Fernando Alonso for the win.

With just over three laps to go, and the Ferrari nose right at the back
of the Renault, the British station cut to advertising and returned
amidst the final lap of the race.

But a source at the ITV team told Autosport-Atlas the break was
unavoidable, as the station had held out on cutting to commercials for
as long as it could.

"We are contractually committed to a number of ad breaks, and when it
started to get exciting [on track] we held off, expecting the battle to
be settled at any point. But when nothing happened, we just had to take
the break, as we're contractually forced to do so."

ITV are committed to fit in five commercial breaks, each about three
minutes long.

A spokesman for ITV Sport told Autosport-Atlas: "Obviously we're a
commercial channel, and if you would have missed anything, we'd have
brought the action [after the break] as a replay. In this case, the lead
didn't change hands.

"We're sorry for any frustration it might have caused the viewers."

Of course it was avoidable.

Avoidance number one: show an extra ad break earlier in the race so that
you don't have to go to a break later.

Avoidance number two: decide who means more to you, the fans of the
sport you are showing or the advertisers, and give preference to the
fans.

Avoidance number three: show the race with a short time delay, and show
every second of it "as live", albeit that in real life it will have
finished about ten minutes before the screening finishes.

There you have it: three possible solutions all of which would have
avoided the farce we had today. It was not unavoidable.

(Sorry, Emma, my anger is not aimed at you, but at the dickhead from ITV
who even now is insulting our intelligence).

And how many during 90 minutes of normal time football? Hmm, none. ITV
making up the rules to suit them. When I asked the regulator of ITV, they
said that it is ITV policy and NOTHING to do with the regulator telling
them to take breaks during qualifying or races for Formula One.

ITV are the worst kind of bullshitters, like Saint Tony Blair.

They will have different contracts with advertisers for different sports.
I agree that the fact that we have to put up with adverts during the race
is crap though. I was sooooo pissed off.

TSN (Canada) broadcasts the ITV coverage. Did my fellow Anglo-Canadians
got shafted too?

Here in Quebec, RDS waits before breaking for commercials that the
important stuff like pit stops is done. This morning, they were about to
have a commercial break when suddenly they saw Ferrari getting ready for
Barrichello's stop. They said (on the air) "let's wait for the pit stop
before the break." They also make sure they've showed all the ads that
they had to air at least 6-7 laps before the end of the race.

Nope. As you can see by the many posts from TSN watchers, there wasn't a
problem at all. Did RDS show the race live?

I've noticed that they sometimes have it delayed for the afternoon and was
surprised to see them do that. It's part of a French language package
where I live so I don't receive it.

RDS shows it live and then a repeat on Monday afternoon.
French(Canadian)-CBC (not sure the proper name for the channel) shows the
races this year taped, at 3PM same day.

RDS for me in Ontario is a pay-extra channel so I don't get it (but could
for ~$3/month).

1. TSN live @ 8am
2. TSN-HD (if available)
3. RDS (live @ 8am)
4. CBS (taped) @ 1PM
5. French-CBC(Montreal) (taped) @ 3PM
6. Speed Channel (taped) @ midnight on Friday.

(Speed Channel normally broadcasts races live, except for the 4 that CBS is
covering).

I wonder how many other countries out there have that many (non-satellite
dish) options for F1?

You mean a whole 90 minutes of adverts?

Just bring back Murray and the Beeb, Allen, Rosenthal and ITV were
made for each other.

Until now ITV's actual coverage has been better than the BEEB. BBC never
had much of a pre-race or post-race show, although they should dump Allen
and get Ben Edwards in, he is already on the ITV payroll anyway.

Yes. All of the European races are live on RDS.

The races that are tape delayed on RDS are those that Radio-Canada shows
live. They have a joint deal for F1.

RDS commentators are pretty good too (if you understand French).
