Imola Attendance (Fri & Sat) worse than the IRL's

Racefan_Dan 24 April 2005 13:19:43
.. though I doubt anyone at Imola got in for free like they do at IRL
IndyCar races (where they drew a massive 10,000 on Friday at St. Pete's a
couple of weeks back, and even fewer on the Saturday)..

I saw Friday's P2 on TV.. and it was embarrassing. You could count the
bodies in some grandstands on your hands & toes.

Associated Press reports:
----
Attendance a concern at Imola

4/23/2005
IMOLA, Italy (AP) - Sluggish ticket sales that have made the San Marino
Grand Prix an uncertain fixture on the F1 calendar show no sign of picking
up.

''Formula chaos, the public flee; Unpopular rules and grandstands empty,''
Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport said in a headline Saturday.

The paper noted that the stands at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit were
emptier than ever during the previous day's practice sessions, estimating
3,000-4,000 spectators.

It blamed high ticket prices and rule changes that include pushing the final
qualifying round to Sunday morning - meaning that those who watch on
Saturday will go home without knowing who will be in pole position.

Tickets at Imola range from 35 euros ($56 Cdn) for a restricted pass to view
Saturday's practice and qualifying sessions, to 450 euros ($725 Cdn) for
seats by the start line on Sunday - the price of a 12-day holiday between
New York and the Caribbean, Gazzetta noted.

''For a family with two children and a medium income it would be half their
wages,'' said Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

Briatore added that he was open to pushing the final round of qualifying
back to Saturday. ''We have to find a format that's more interesting,'' he
said.

Though the San Marino Grand Prix marks its 25th anniversary in 2005, the
fixture is at risk because organizers want to switch some races in Asia. It
is one of two GPs held in Italy, along with the Italian GP at the Monza
circuit, which draws a steady stream of fans from nearby Milan.

They don't seem to mention that the trend this year may be influenced by the
fickle fashion for red.

True, but also the fact the people may becoming bored of F1?

I think for the more casual fan (and many of these attend GP's) the rules
are too complicated, and while the racing has been better this year than
previous years its still been a bit on the boring side for several years.

You want to look at MotoGP attendance, the racing is amazing and the fans
know it :-)

I was in Imola for all three days. The lack of people was simply a
pleasure on Friday and Saturday, no queues anywhere and nobody
screaming "Schumi!" and blasting their air-horns.
Tickets at Imola range from 35 euros ($56 Cdn) for a restricted pass to view >Saturday's practice and qualifying sessions, to 450 euros ($725 Cdn) for >seats by the start line on Sunday - the price of a 12-day holiday between >New York and the Caribbean, Gazzetta noted.

For Friday, 25 euros got me a go-anywhere ticket (except the main
grandstand): http://www.teemu.net/imola05/friday/
For Saturday, 55 euros for Tribuna L, situated between the
last chicane and paddock, with good views of the corner and the paddock
(from the top row): http://www.teemu.net/imola05/saturday/
For Sunday, 200 euros for Tribuna E at the Acqua Minerali corner:
http://www.teemu.net/imola05/sunday/

On Sunday the grandstand was packed.

I thought they had secured the GP for five more years:

from the grandstand?

I'm assuming it's taken using the 500mm?

Yes, clearly you would put Ferrari and Marlboro on the same line if you
were using the "divided by" symbol so I'm sure it must mean something else.

Unless it's a secret code that means "Ferrari over-divided by Marlboro".

Yes, from the grandstand E, with the 500mm. Actually, combined with the
1.3x "multiplication factor" of the Canon 1D Mk II body, the resulting
650mm focal length is sometimes a bit too much.

But what does it mean when you look at the other side? Now it gets
really confusing 'cause it says "Ferrari Marlboro divided by" which
makes even less sense!

Mmm!, I'm thinking of the the primary school way of saying divided
by...Shared between?

I know Philip Morris used to stick all his KKK stuff on his Marlboro
cigarette packets and hide them inside the glued parts of the flip top
packets.

Possibly something insulting if indeed it has anything to do with Morris :-/

Thanks....I think you're costing me money though. My 300mm suddenly seems a
bit.....inadequate.

Also, pleasantly surprised to not see any catch fencing in the way of such a
low shot. Can't do that much without a photo pass anymore.

:-) Actually I miss my 300mm/2.8 which was lighter to handhold than the
500mm and didn't result in so tight crops.

Yep, Imola is a great place for photography from grandstands and general
admission areas. And if you can get right next to a single level of
fencing, you can still get good shots (like this from outside the
Villeneuve corner before Tosa):

Imola just moved up a notch on the "tracks to see" list....

A few years ago I tried getting a few shots through the fence of Champ Cars
leaving the pits at Road America. There is but a single fence in the way
there also. None came out very good and so I have not tried since. Perhaps
I'll try again this year (not with Champ Car of course).

It should be ok with a telephoto lens, provided that you can get the
lens almost to touch the fence and that the wire net isn't too tight:
http://www.teemu.net/imola05/thursday/Safety%20fencing.%20_U4C1161.html

Just focus manually on the usual path of the car and then follow the
car as it approaches the spot and then snap away. With a slow shutter
speed you'll get a nice blur in the background and tires.

In Imola you'll sometimes find vacant photographers holes, that's even
better (this shot is from Montreal though, where the Senna curve is a
prime spot: http://www.teemu.net/photos/f1/0289-10.html).

I just never get enough of seeing fencing Teemu, thanks.....:-)

I have done pretty well using that very technique (sans fencing). Autofocus
isn't even an option IMO. But the cars never seemed to go through the exact
spot where I could get a clear shot. I either got only part of the car or,
more likely, part of the fence.

The security guys won't let you into those places without a pass over here.
My only experience in Europe is at Le Mans and Spa. There sure weren't any
empty spots at Le Mans and even if there were they definitely weren't going
to let me in. Spa wasn't bad as I was there for LMES. Not many people
around so could usually get a good shot from the general admission areas.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, perhaps I won't be quite so intimidated by the
fences this year. And keep the pictures coming, they are appreciated.
