Question for the Canadians

Domenic Mastromonaco 3 April 2005 12:40:57
Does anyone know why neither TSN nor RDS nor Speed carried Q2 live?

Not that getting up early to watch the race hung-over is any more
sensible...particularly with Vic Rauther up to his usual drossy dialogue. At
least the shift to DST made it _appear_ I wasn't getting up at 0530 for the
race.

You must be Canadian then, because Speed is an American channel. BTW, your
last name should start with a "c" not an "h".

Because putting Q2 just before the race is dumb.

What I want to know is, why did I end up watching a Pope-a-thon on
SRC instead of the race that their schedule said they would show?

Ahhh the days have gone by. When I used to get home at 5:30am Sunday
morning just to watch the race. After the pub, there was always
somewhere to go...

I've never been east of Quebec City, in Canada, Tony however . . .

According to Bok, who did the whole Maritimes thing late August before
University started in Toronto in September, it's a nice time to visit.
She did mention something about frost on the Vee Dub's windows in the
morning though.

If the East Coast is anything like the West Coast, September is the
best month. Tourists have mainly buggered off, weather is moderate, kids
are back in school, parents are back to work. You get the place to
yourself and the other discerning folks who vacation at that time of
year [In the Northern Hemisphere.] for precisely those reasons.

You might want to have a look here regarding weather, climate predictions:

Or:

http://www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/saisons/index_e.html

Personally, I've never spent a colder season than any of them in
England so I reckon you won't need to fear the elements.

Can't help much more than James did Tony. I've only been as far east to
Montreal so the Maritimes are on my list to do. But in most places Sept
still has lovely weather and of course school is back and tourists have
buggered off (well, other than yourself and co.).

I can tell you though that the Sept. weather in Saskatchewan/Alberta is
really nice and the mosquitos have packed it in for the season as well ;-)

For whale watching try St. Andrews New Brunswick early September. Get a trip
starting after lunch and the captain may stay out much longer than morning
cruises where he has to get back for next trip.
Last Sept. I was out for about 4 hours and saw a humpback breach right out
of the water and many finbacks surfacing right alongside, also seals and
other lovely sights.

This is who I go with but many others in St. Andrews.

I'd rate it pretty highly, with a couple of caveats. From August on is
hurricane season, and while they rarely make it that far up the coast, they
can nonetheless make for a couple of quite wet and windy days (make you feel
at home? 8*). It will be cooler than high-summer, which is a plus as far as
I'm concerned (not being a big fan of sweat). Nights cooling off enough to
keep the mosquitos under control, the fall colours will be starting (and
that's a show for the foliage fans). I'm not sure about the whales, but
don't think they'd be gone yet. It's actually pretty decent because the main
tourist season will be past and there'll be space enough to breath, but
things will still be open (typically until Canadian thanksgiving weekend, in
early October). Where would you be landing? What sort of touristy or
non-touristy stuff would you be looking to do? How long would the visit be?
Renting a vehicle of some sort, I would presume?

We're actually thinking of hitting the Rock (Newfoundland) this summer/fall,
though it isn't confirmed. Le Mans, alas, is out this year. Sigh. Take care,

Joe

Weather in the Maritimes (NS NB and PEI) is usually great in August and
September and often an Indian Summer in October. But on the water it is
cooler so take something warm when whale watching.

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for the info, same to James, Joe & Dennis..

We're looking at either flying to Halifax and renting a car, or maybe Montreal and tacking an
extra week onto the trip.

Either way, nothing decided yet..

I'm sure I'll have more questions later !

RASF1 has been pretty crap for the last six months.. Suddenly, I remember why I persevere!

Happy to help, another trip well worth taking is round the Cabot Trail in
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, awesome scenery and if the leaves are starting to
turn you see incredible sights. Whales there too. The restoration of
Fortress Louisburg in the same area is well worth a visit too, largest
restoration in North America at one time. Alexander Graham Bell museum in
Baddeck well worth a visit too.

The best weather here in NS is in August and September. Warm days,
cool nights and little rain. August is prime time for whale watching.
Pilot whales come into Halifax Harbour and feed right by the docks.
